ESCAPED PRISONER

NO TRACE DISCOVERED LPKB FREbb ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, April 20. No further trace has been found of the prisoner Colin William Glass, aged 26, since Monday night, when he made a daring escape from the Waikeria Institute, near Te Awamutu. Warders are still scouring the district, and a vigilant watch is being kept by tne police in an attempt to recapture Glass, who was serving a sentence of five years ? imprisonment for attempting to discharge a loaded revolver at a detective in Auckland in 1934. Glass made his escape during the recreation period about 7.30 on Mon-_ day evening. Momentarily eluding the warders, he dashed into the darkness of the grounds, with members of the staff close behind him. A search was immediately organised, and three hours' later he was seen again about two miles north of the institute. Again, however; he disappeared, when his pursuers were only a few yards away. Subsequently the search has been continued, and a wide area has been thoroughly combed by large parties' of warders.

Although Waikeria is the centre of a well-settled farming district, there are numerous patches of heavy scrub, which would afford some measure of security to a fugitive. EXCUSE NOT ACCEPTED. WELLINGTON, April 21. Leslie Eric Smith. 24, .mechanic, was sentenced to an additional term of fourteen days’ imprisonment, at the Magistrate’s Court, to-day, on a charge of escaping from custody. The police stated that Smith, in company with four other prisoners, was taken to the hospital for treatment, and escaped. He was arrested one and a half hours later. In evidence. Smith said that he went lo a friend’s house to obtain money to pay the fine, for non-payment of which he was imprisoned. The Magistrate (Mr. Goulding) said the prison authorities would have given him every opportunity to obtain the money.
