[per peess association.] MUNICIPAL BUILDINGS. TE AROHA. February 9. The foundation stone of the new Municipal Buildings was laid last evening by Hon. Walter Nash, who was welcomed to the district by the Mayoi (Mr. R. Coulter, M.P.), in the presence of a large gathering. The Minister said that the erection of such a fine building was evidence of the borough’s progress, and the worthy efforts of the town’s pioneers. The Mayor stated that the cost of the offices was £5235, and they provided for a library, a. long-felt want. The Minister was presented by the contractor (Mr. W. G. Barclay.) wtih a silver trowel, inscribed. X ENGINEERING degree. WELLINGTON. Taylor. C. M. Wheeler. Although all the successful candidates come from Canterbury University College, they live in various parts of New Zealand. FARMERS' TOUR WELLINGTON, February S. An official farewell was accorded to five members of the New Zealand Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs before their departure by the Awatea for Sydney to-day to attend the Australian sesquicentennial celebrations and join a similar team from Great Britain at Adelaide. The gathering was held in Parliament House in the office of the Minister for Agriculture (Hon. W. Lee Martin), and in his absence, through indisposition, members of the team were addressed by the Postmaster-General (Hon. F. Jones). The leader of the team (Mr. C. M. Whatman) thanked the Minister on behalf of the team for his good wishes. The other members, Messrs. A. Fisher, H. McKenzie. A. Viles, and A. Cowan, also returned thanks. The team was entertained by the Minister to afternoon tea.
fOUNC; MAN DROWNJEJO NEW PLYMOUTH, February 8. When a canvas canoe containing foui' young men overtured in the New Plymouth harbour to-night, Reginald Davis, aged 20, was drowned. Richard Newall. aged 23, was taken Io hospital, but he is uiidcislood Io he in a satisfactory condition. 'l'he harbour was calm when the canoe put out. about 8.15 p.m'. A few hundred yards off Ngamotu beach the cifrioe capsized and the four were thrown into the water.
A. Segar said afterwards, that his foot was caught in a grating, but he managed to free himself and give assistance to Newall and Davis and L. Beattie. He took Newall to the upturned canoe and told him to hangon. Beattie also reached the canoe and Segar swam back to look for Davis who, however, had disappeared in the darkness. Segar and-Beattie swam ashore for assistance.
A yacht manned by Edmond Asquith and Ivan Hodder, who were cruising in the harbour, took Newall from the canoe and landed him on the beach, where he was attended at the palladium and taken to hospital, where he is reported lo be comfortable.
Davis’s body, in spite of dragging, had not been found at midnight.
