CHRISTCHURCH, December 28 There was again httle bright d |et in the second day’s P and Shield game between Canteibu y Otago at Lancaster Pa rk, when Canterbury continued its in » , which was postponed yesterday, b cause of rain. The pitch was soft and the. outfield was slow. The Canterbury batsmen were play ing the bowling of Dunning and Elmes carefully and quietly. These two howled almost unchanged throughout the innings. Menzies and Stokes, the notout batsmen, carried Canterbury s first day’s score of 58 for two wickets to 105 before the former was caught and bowled by Dunning for 49.. Stokes was quietly confident, and took no risks, scoring steadily with well placed shots. The brightest moments of the innings were provided by Hadlee, who batted freely and aggressively. The best bowler was Dunning, who bowled unchanged from one end 33.6 overs for six wickets, costing only 51. runs. • . _ , , In its second innings, Otago lost one wicket for 105 runs, Uttley made 74 not out, batting soundly and scoring steadily with crisp, hard-hit strokes. TO-DAY’S PLAY CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 29. With both sides hopeful of an outright win, considerable interest was manifested'in the resumption of play in the Plunket Shield match between Otago and Canterbury, this morning. With one wicket down for 105 in their second' innings, Otago, it was believed, were hopeful of adding another 140 runs before putting Canterbury in on the worn wicket, with just over 200 runs to get in about three hours. Uttley (54) and Robertson (14) started off again confidently. Uttley’s fighting knock came to a close ih Burtt’s fifth over. Otago’s total was 127 for two, the partnership having added 90.

There was some lively batting when Chettleburgh joined Robertson, the pair adding 80 in about 50 minutes, bringing the total to 207. Chettleburgh was particularly enterprising.' Four wickets were down for 216, when Robertson’s solid innings ended. He batted for about three hours. After Mulcock broke the partnership, he went through the Otago batsmen, and secured the hat trick, taking the wickets of Elmes, Howden and Mills. At lunch, Otago’s score was 236 for eight, and Mulcock’s figures were six for 49. OTAGO —Second Innings. !
