TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping meetings to comb 30— Manawatu. Januarv 1 and 3.—Auckland. January 1 and 3.—Greymouth. • January I—Waikouaiti. January I—Wyndham.1—Wyndham. January I—Waiau. January 1, 3—Hawke s Bay. January 1. 3—Stratford. January 1, 3—Wairarapa. January 1, 3—Marton. January 3-Oamarn. January 3„ \ January 'i, B—Reefton. Disappointed: Clubman, on the .strength of brilliant. track work, was made favourite in the. maiden race at Hokitika, hut was never galloping freely on the corners, and disappointed again.

Card Player: The McLean Stakes winner, , Card ' Player, now owned in Greymouth, made a reappearance at Hokitika, but disappointed badly in view of her good gallops at Omoto. A slow beginning did! not help the Paper Money filly, and she appeared unable to handle • i the turns, once on the journey.

Bad Luck: F. A. Roberts had bad luck to lose the services of Lady Athena at Hokitika, the mare being galloped on as the field, swung out of the straight in the Kanieri Hack. Despite/a severe injury, the mare galloped well enough \ to suggesL_tj;at she would have collected a stake on the circuit. She has been returned to Riccarton.

Bright Prospect: The winner of the maiden stakes at. Hokitika on Monday, Bright Prospect, won well enough to suggest his running prominently again at Greymouth. He and G.lenacre outclassed the field, for Bright Prospect to win by a neck, and these two may be found fighting out the finish of the Novice Stakes at Omoto. Patuma, third at Hokitika, but two lengths away, may be improved sufficiently to make a race of it with the other two.

Veteran’s Return: Eight-year-old Royal Amphora, once a more than useful sprinter, returned to the winning list at Hokitika, with a decisive victory over Land Raid and Rose Vai in good time. Royal Amphora had not. won a race for two years, but x galloped with plenty ol dash, and aiter trailing the other two to the straight, had too much pace for ■ them in the run home. This was not Land Raid’s true form, and he 'should be much improved by the race.

Suleiman Scratched: Suleiman was scratched for the Electrijc Handicap, run at Auckland to-day, at 4.33 p.m., yesterday.

Riders for Riccarton: W. Jenkins has decided to forego riding engagements at Wyndham, and will tafce the mount on Dictate in the Waikouaiti Cup. Jenkins will probably settle at Riccarton, and should command plenty of riding. J. McFarlane, who has been stationed at Riverton will also settle at Riccarton.

Allowance, Reduced: E. Jones, who rode On Call and Double Gift to victory at Wingatui yesterday, exhausted his right to claim a seven pounds apprentice allowance, and he started on a five pounds allowance when he rode Natty in the concluding event.

A Useful Galloper: Passaform, a Wingatui winner, is a neatly-built colt by Balboa from Fair.form, dam of Some Form, Charmane, 'and Tauramai. As a rule, Balboa's .stock do not figure prominently for early speed, but Passaform appears to be an exception. '

Wyndham Rehandicaps: -- The following rehandicaps have been declared for the Wyndham Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday: — Wyndham Cup: Davolo 9.8. High Glee 7.10. President’s Handicap:'Gold Boa 10.2, Top Row 9.1, Double Gift 7.9. Mimihau Hack Handicap: Nightwings 8.1.

Trainer Cautioned: ■ After the decision of the St. Andrew’s Handicap at Wingatui yester- /. day, E. Jones, rider of Queen of Song, complained to the judicial committee of the rough riding by D. O’Connor, rider of Silver Streak, during the race. Evidence was called and it was decided that no further action be taken. The committee also heard a complaint by D. O’Connor against P. T. Hogan, of striking him in the jockey’s room immediately after the race, and it was decided to chution Hogan.

OLD CUSTOM REVIVED.

PRESENT FOR JOCKEY,

SYDNEY, December 16.

There was a t’ime, particularly in the country; when a jockey, having ridden an outsider to success, presented himself among the bookmakers for tangible proof of their appreciation. Frequently it was the only reward the rider could hope for. The custom was revived at Rosebery yesterday, when a spontaneous suggestion by a bookmaker led to the presentation of a handsome present to C. Findlay after he had ridden Lady Cav, who won the first division of the Progressive Handicap, starting at 20 to 1.

Bookmakers had had an excellent result in the previous race when Anliinga at 20 to 1 had scored' in a close finish with Dea d’Or and Winning Post in the second division of the Three and Four Years Old Handicap, and when Findlay got another effort out of Lady Cav to beat the 6 to 4 favourite Tickle in the Progressive Handicap, their joy knew no bounds. Their demonstration of cheering was carried on with unusual hilarity. Such a thing as two “skippers” in succession had not been known for many months, and all joined in cries of congratulation to the rider. Then someone suggested' a present for the jockey. No sooner said than done; and after Findlay had dressed he was brought to the betting ring by one of the sponsors of the scheme, and the present was handed over. * Lady Cav was one of the first to move off, and near the half-mile was followed by Tickle, Broadway Swell, Cool Joy, and Minnesota. Except that Downham moved up there was littlq alteration in the straight, and with less than a furlong remaining, Tickle seemed to hav,e a grip of the race. Findlay was not to be beaten. In the last few strides he rode Lady Cav furiously, and she won by half a length.

Trotting MEETINGS TO COME ■'

December 30, 31—Auckland. January 1, 3 —Canterbury Park. January 5, 6—Greymouth. January 15—Cambridge.

Berkett had thirteen drives at the Westport Trotting Club’s meeting before securing a win yesterday on Worthy Lad, and then had to survive an appeal by C. K. Yeatman, driver of the third horse, Storm Signal, in the Granity Handicap, on the grounds that the winner had not been nominated for the race. Worthy Lad’s name did not appear in the list of nominations for the second day in the. first day’s book, and an inquiry was opened by the Stipendary Steward, Mn J. S. Shaw, the totalisator pay out being held up for some time. Although no official statement as.to the evidence, at the inquiry was handed to the press, other than that the appeal had been dismissed, and that Berkett had been fined* £5 for not confirming his nomination in the manner required, it is understood that Berkett claimed to have ’phoned the nomination all right, but it was mislaid. The rules of trotting state that a domination by telegram or telephone must be confirmed on the usual forms.

NOTES FROM EPSOM.

FREMONT IMPRESSES

[special to “star.”]

AUCKLAND, December 28.

An effect of dividing the December Handicap field, at Epsom to-day, was that Cavan Chief and Fremont paid less than stakes to place investors, yet Kewpie’s Queen, winner of the second' division, paid double figures to win. Fremont was a very hot favourite, and although beaten, he proved that he is an exceptionally good horse by a great burst of speed down the back the last time, going up from last of the bunch to second in a little over a furlong. Cavan Chief has become solid, but Fremont is likely to

go further at the meeting. Successful Debut: J. T. Paul produced the six-year-old mare Within to win the Selby Handicap at her first appearance. She trotted without a mistake, and Biworthy, who covered a lot of extra ground, finished well for third. Willow Wave’s Cup: > Excepting that Bonny Azure was slow to strike her straps, the eight pacers in the Auckland Cup got away smartly. King’s Warrior set a strong pace for Tempest, Lucky Jack, Willow Wave, who on this occasion, began as well as any of the others, Bonny Azure, Lawn Derby, Roi I’Or, and Indianapolis. The order past the stands was the same, Tempest being three lengths ahead of Lucky Jack. The half-mile, was reached in 1-8, and a the mile, reached in 2.13, they were in Indian file, with one and a-hair lengths between each horse. Shortly afterwards, when turning into the straight, Lawn Derby broke, and thereafter he was out of the contest. With a round to go, King’s Warrior led Tempest, Willow Wave, and Lucky Jack, in close order, and the same lad intn the home run. with

quartette lea into me nume Bonny Azure, Roi I’Or, and Indianapolis in hopeless positions. King’s Warrior was soon under pressure from Willow Wave, who won very solidly by a neck, with Lucky Jack two lengths off, and Tempest another one and a-half lengths away, fourth. Then came Roi I’Or, Indianapolis, Bonny Azure, and Lawn Derby. Willow Wave paid just over double figures to win, and almost half as much for a place. He was well handled by O. E. Hooper, and, on the day, was really unbeatable. Eyre Lucky: J. T. Paul produced his second winner in Eyre, but she was very lucky to beat Roy Berry’s Young -Pointer by half a head, when the latter broke on the post, after a fast run'.round the field’ in the last quarter. Berry paraded three specially good ones in Fremont, lucky Jack, and Young Pointer, and he should have won two races. Royal Doulton, who was third, will be improved by the race.

Parrish Belle Returns: Public confidence in J. T. Paul’s ability to drive his third winner during the day, was not justified in the case of Te Kahu, the favourite for the Rowe Memorial Handicap. He was handy, fourth, with half a mile to gO, but began to flag soon afterwards. Parrish Belle, after being handy throughout, returned’ to the winning list after a long absence, winning easily from’ Bittersweet, who was fifth entering the last half mile, and finished well. Tan John was the pacemaker, and was still in front at the straight entrance, but weakened in the run home, and finished a poor fourth. Then came Te Kahu, Young Rodney, and Native Tree.
