ACCIDENTS AND TRAGEDIES

FATAL DIVE FROM YACHT. [per press association.] AUCKLAND, December 12. A drowning accident! occurred at Fowler’s Beach, near Birkenhead, this morning, the victim being Edward Victor Tomlin, the eldest son of Mr and Mrs V. Tomlin, of New; Lynn. Tomlin was a memebr of a weekend yachting party of four young people. Two members of the party were ashore at the time of the accident, Tomlin being aboard the yacht, which was anchored about 300 yards from the shore, with the remaining member of the party, a girl. He dived overboard for a swim, but almost immediately was seen to be in difficulties, and disappeared. His companion was powerless to help, as she could not- swim, and the yacht’s dinghy was ashore. The other members of the yachting party were not aware of the tragedy until they returned, to the yacht. They then notified the police, and dragging was begun. Tomlin was not a good swimmer.

BABY’S BODY FOUND

DUNEDIN, December 13

The body of a full-time male infant was- found beside Kaikorai stream, near the city, by children yesterday. A small towel was wrapped round the body, and the end of it was stuffed in Ihe baby’s mouth. . . A post-mortem examination is being made to-day.

WOMAN KILLED.

WANGANUI, December 12

In a motor collision near Utiku on Saturday evening, Rose Ella Liddicoat, aged 35, married, of Mangaweka, was killed.

Another passenger in the car, Eileen Henderson, aged 38, married,, •of Mangaweka, was seriously injured. The driver of the car and two other occupants escaped injury.

DRIVER’S DEATH ON TRAIN

TAIHAPE, December 13.

The death occurred suddenly of Daniel Bailey, aged 49, at 9.30 this morning, while he was driving the engine of a mixed train, Ohakune to Marton. The train was 9 miles north of Taihape when Bailey collapsed and died. The fireman, D. R. Gordon, one of the youngest in the service, applied the emergency brake, and stopped the train. Another driver was sent from Taihape, the train arriving here half an hour. late. ...

INJURED IN FALL.

WESTPORT, December 12.

Mrs J. M. Robertson, wife of the Deputy-Mayor,, of Wesltpojrt, ’injured a sfioulder through a fall at Carter’s Beach, this afternoon. She was admitted to the Buller Hospital, and it is thought that the shoulder is dislocated.
