STERILISED AS PUNISHMENT
A KANSAS SCANDAL
TOPEKA, October 16
An outcry has been raised here by an allegation that sixty-two girl inmates of the State Industrial School at. Beloit, Kansas, were submitted to sterilisation operations. The matter was revealed by Mrs. McCarthy, formerly a member of the United States Congress, in a. speech to members of the Local Women’s Democratic Club. She urged them to protest to the State authorities.
The girls, she declared, were all undei’ sixteen years of age. “The pleas of the parents,” she said, “were not able to stop these wholesale sterilisations, which are apparently performed as a punishment.
It is horrible to think of these girls deprived of motherhood and the chance of a happy married life for no apparent reason. Eventually this may drive the girls to the streets.” Questioned about these allegations, Mr. Will T. Beck, chairman of the State Reformatories Board of Administration, emphasised that no operations had been performed without the consent of the parents of girls concerned. —British United Press.
