(Recd. June 23, 2.30 p.m. LONDON, June 22. Only a few voices were raised in opposition to Mr. Chamberlain s motion that Members of the Commons salaries be increased to £6OO yearly. Tho motion was carried by 325 to I<.

Mr. Chamberlain said he was surprised, and distressed to find many members were living beyond their means, and were obliged to curtain their children’s education and actuallv allow themselves sufficient food. ' “We don’t want to fix a salary which will Induce people to enter the Commons for the purpose of earning more than they could outside. On the other hand we don't want the salary so low that mon and women capable of valuable service would be prevented from entering the Commons." “The extra cost will be £112,000 yearly.
