N.Z. BOWLING FLOGGED

NOTTS. SAVES GAME

HARDSTAFF-GUNN CENTURIES [by CABLE —PBESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] NOTTINGHAM, June 22. Notts took full advantage of the perfect pitch, though the bowling wassteady enough to keep the scoring rate moderate. Keeton and Knowles passed the century unseparated before lunch. Hardstaff and Gunn built on to this advantageous opening, a line partnership taking the score to 199 for the fourth wicket. Hardstaff’s batting suggested that the bowlers will find him difficult to dislodge on a good wicket in the Test.

Cowie again bowled with great heart, but the unhelpful wicket minimised his menace. Dunning pegged away determinedly. He might easily havcThad more success, several times beating the bat, but missing the stumps. The Tindill—-Moloney combination again captured a wicket. Tindill’s work was very- steady, there being only two byes in the first three hundred. Neither Roberts nor Weir appeared- to cause the batsmen undue, worry, though a difficult catch was missed in'the slips off the latter. In the absence of Vivian and Gallichan, Donnelly shouldered the left hand slow bowling fairly inexpensively, till the-wood' was laid on late in the day by Gunn and Voce. New Zealand faced a difficult task in dismissing a strong batting side on a beautiful wicket. Nevertheless, their performance .in this match is an encouragement for the Test. Scores:
