“His Majesty’s Government attach the greatest importance to the stimulation of international trade,” the Hon. Oliver Stanley told the House of Commons, when answering a question on what steps were being taken to implement the desire expressed by the Imperial Conference in this sense. The President of the Board of Trade added that the Government, proposed with this object, to continue their policy of concluding in appropriate cases a bi-lateral trade agreement, of which benefits were generalised under the most favoured nation clause. He also referred to the inquiries being conducted by the Belgian Prime Minister, M. Van Zeeland.

Thei Empire agreements which expire Jn July, have been extended to 1940, with the same preferences, according to an announcement by the Revenue Minister (Mr Ilsley) contradicting the report that the remarks on freer trade by the Prime Minister, presaged the cancellation of the Ottawa Pacts.
