SCHOONER WRECKED

CREW SAFELY LANDED.

[BY CABLE—-PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] APIA, June 20. The auxiliary schooner Makoa, owned by the Burns, Philp Company, is a total wreck at. Hull Island, in the Phoenix Group. No lives were lost and the crew and native labour are all ashore and well, with sufficient food and water. The Makoa had been overdue for about, three weeks when the. Burns, Philp Company asked the Union Company steamer Monowai, which left Suva last Friday, to call at. Hull Island and report. To-day the following message was received from the master of the Mono-v.-aiMakoa. is a total wreck at Hull Island. No lives were lost.” This message was passed on to 11.M.5. Wellington, en route from the Union flroup to Apia, and the commander then dispatched the tollowing message to the master of the Monona;: —“Please state on what part of Hull Island the Makoa is wrecked, what assistance you rendered, and if any more is required. What is the probable, period the Makoa s crew can live on the present stores ami water?

The master of th<* Monowai ret.lied: —"Tho Makoa wrecked at the settlement on the north-west coast. Tho vessel is a total loss, only the ribs remaining. The crow will probably have plenty of stores as Burns. Philp have a copra plantation there. The Makoa was apparently landing stores] er loading copra when she was wrecked. Tho crew did not want any as-J sistanco. or stores from me. so apparent lv they are well supplied. They told inc they expected a warship in a few days, ami were all well." 'Pho Burns.
