MEETINGS TO COME

June 26—-Ashburton County. June 30 —Dannevirke Hunt.

Silver Coat Injured: A Sydney cablegram stated that Silver Coat, who won the Rosehill Hurdles on Saturday, struck himself during the race, and is now receiving veterinary attention.

Sky Pilot: Sky Pilot returned from Auckland, in the best of condition, and is now’ being Tiieritidtfed as one of the best possibilities of the future. Monastic:

Monastic ricked himself when schooling at Auckland, and as a result could not be produced., It is hoped, that it will be only a temporary trouble.

Talking': If price is any indication of merit, Talking, who was sold at 19,000gn5., will get about 15 stone in the Melbourne Cup. Set Penalties:

Under the conditions of the Ashburton County Racing Club’s programme for next Saturday’s winter fixture, the. winner of any race after the declaration of wteights must carry a penalty of 71b. Maroha will therefore now carry 8.0 in the Mayfield Hack Handicap, and Primak’s weight in the Moreton Hack Handicap will be increased to S.B. Maiden Event at AshbuCtofi: Weights to be carried in the Maiden Stakes, six furlongs, at the Ashburton County Racing Club’s meeting: next Saturday, are: —Donadea, Doctor . Duthie, Almira, Vola Dale, Pol Roger, Short Circuit, Banker’s Choice, Elmarch, Queen Linda, First Spec, Combat, Twilight Song, Prince Flaneur. Aggravate, Highbank 8.10. Love Affair, Elegy, Happy Night, Cocksure, Solpit, Last Post, Locknit, Royal Refrain 8.0. ' R. Coveney: R. Coveney, who made a return to the saddle some months ago, after a lengthy absence, on account of a severe accident, has handed I ,over The Sandwichman and Free Rose, the pair he was training at Blenheim, to A. J. Griffen, who is now quartered there. Coveney is now to concentrate on riding, *and he left on Saturday evening, after the Greymouth meeting, for Riccarton, where, he will make liisi headquarters.

Cuddle Again: While spelling at Nelson, Cuddle has made ohe of the remarkable trangfornfations that have occurred so often, in her career, and to all outward sign she is ready to start on another serious preparation. According to T. R. George there is every reason to believe that she may come up again nearly as good! as'ever, and she is to be taken over to Trentham after the Wellington meeting next month. Like Silver Ring, who is also in work again at Greymouth, Cuddle is rising eight years old. MaroWs Success:

The success of Maroha on Saturday was popularly received, as his ownertrainer, Mr R. Adamson, always has a hofse or two in work regardless of results, and. being an old West Coast resident has seldom missed bringing a horse to the Coast fixtures. Maroha is bred well enough to earn more distinction. He is by Martarma from Wimple, by Limond from Veil, dam of Veilmond. He closely resembles Martara, also by Martarma, in appearance and build, but as he is now rising seven years of age, he is not likely ever to reach anything like the heights attained by that, good gelding.

A Strong Pair: The stable-mates Lord Vai and Black Marlin have been restricted to easy tasks alter their strenuous racing at the Great Northern meeting. All going well in the interim, this pair will be taken to Wellington next month, a procedure which was undertaken 12 months ago with good results, both horses getting on the winning list. Lord Vai’s form in hurdle races at Ellerslie wasi good and consistent. and more money looks assured for him before the jumping season ends. Owing to a halt in his preparation before the meeting Black Marlin was not. seen at his best, but be is a promising steeplechaser, who is likely to be seen to better advantage at Trentham.

Potent. Improves:, Potent, owned at Kaiata by Mr Joseph Johnston, and now trained at Riccarton by him, lias shown marked improvement since lie has been in Canterbury. He is a five-year-old gelding by Potoa from Fraisette. a mare imported to Auckland by Dr. Ring, by Valais’ from Fraise by Santry. On Saturday, at Omoto, he ran two highly creditable seconds, and would have won the Grandstand Handicap, but for his hard' race with that speedy sprinter, Wine Card, in the Kaimata Hack, a little more than an hour earlier. After making the pace in the big event, he went under by only a nose to Maroha. so it appeared that if he had been reserved for the big race, he would have won. However, he should make amends soon.

Jrotting MEETINGS TO COME

June 23. —Auckland.

Twos Loose: Twos Loose is being generally awarded the distinction of the champion two-y£ar-old of the season. The excuse book has a page for the others.

Speed}' But Unsteady: Swordsman has a lot of speed, but in races where steadiness of gait is the main consideration he has not been the ideal racehorse to date.

A Useful Team: Mr W. Johnstone, for whom Max Stewart is now trainer, has a team of four racing at the Auckland meeting —King’s Play, Lady Fame, Transfer and Transworthy.

•Penalty for Chleftainess: Chieftainess, who is nominated for the Lyndhurst Trot Handicap at the Ashburton Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday, has been penalised 36yds. on account of her first and second at Omoto.

A Wide Gap: The Rey de Oro—Necessity gelding, Pukeuri, was only tenth favourite in the first trot a.t Omoto on Saturday, but he was sent out third choice in the Kaiata Trot. He failed to leave the mark in both starts.

Will Be Useful: A. Holmes raced Bridget Borough, a well-bred four-year-old, by Rey d'e Oro —Lady Renetta, at Omoto on Saturday, and particularly in her second start, she impressed as likely to become useful. She is a nice pacer, with a good turn of speed, and may soon get on the winning list.

A Fine Young Pacer: - Kenworthy, who finished second in the Cornwall Handicap at Epsom, is a fine young pacer, who has made splendid progress in the last few months. Prior to being unplaced in the Coronation Cup at Claudelands, Kenworthy had not missed a place in 10 starts, and he won the Taranaki Trotting Cup for F. V. Cutts very easily.

Ready for Work: ’ Sea Gift developed a festered foot after, her third to Rocks Ahead and Pot Luck in the President’s Handicap at Oamaru in May. She had to forego Forbury engagements, and was, not'able to take part at Ashburton or Addington. She has now recovered, and will he put into work by E. J. Smith, in time to be ready for the August meeting at Addington. Willow Wave:

O. E. Hooper, who broke a bone in an ankle when he fell at the last Forbury Park meeting, is making a. good recovery, and will be back in the sti'llty again before the new season is far advanced. The star performer of his team for next year’s racing will probably be Willow Wave, who has been taken up after a good spell. Willow Wave has proved himself a good stayer and a fine pacer on a soft track, although his behaviour at the barrier on occasions has left a doubt whether he is the ideal'racehorse.

An Early Winner: G. S. Walton’s four-year-old gelding, Nahlin, by Acron from Merry Logan, can. be ticked off for an early success over a sprint distance. He finished fifth in the Kaiata Trot at Omoto on Saturday, after pacing evenly throughout. This gelding has a lot of pace, and the race wouldjlo him good. He is to race at Ashburton on Saturday next, and at Oamaru on the following Saturday, and as he is completely at home on the grass track, his performances will be watched with interest. Well-bred Mare:

Flying Helen, who won the Kaiata Trot at Omoto, on Saturday, is a. six-year-old mare by Flying Prince from Helen. Flying Prince was highly promising as a two-year-old but failed to live up to his early promise. He is royally brey, by Wrack from Queen Cole, by Ribbonwood —Norice, Helen, the dam of Saturday’s winner, is by Brent Locanda from Tui Russell, by Russell Patch—-Elie de Beaumont, by Prince Imperial from a Mambrino King mare. Flying Helen has always had a reputation for speed, but previously had not shown stamina enough to go even a mile. She was turned out in solid condition on Saturday. the result of a lot. of strong pace work, and after finishing fourth in the June Handicap, she came out to win the second trot convincingly.
