MAGISTRATE’S COURT

TO-DAY’S CIVIL CASES Judgment for plaintiff by default., with costs, was given in the Magistrate's Court, Greymouth, to-day, by Mr. Raymond Ferner, S.M., in the. following cases: — Stanley Burnett White v. Robert Bruce Stewart. £l3l/10/-, costs £7 1/9; Catherine Badger v. Ellen Nyber, £219/11/7, costs £9/14/-. Robert Gomer Hall v. Cecil Chadwick. £4 12/6. costs 9/-; Herbert C. Moore v. Ngaio M. Barrett, £l/10/-, costs S/-; J. Haines v. M. Andrews, £3/i/-, costs £l/5/6; C. Smith, Ltd. v. Alex Campbell, 14/10, costs 18/6. BREACH OF AWARD The. Inspector of Awards (Mr. C. H. Hoskin) proceeded against Cooper's Cash Butchery, Ltd., claiming a penalty of £lO for breach of award. Mr. Hoskin said that his inspection of the defendant’s wages-book revealed the fact that two workers had not received the award rate of wages. R. Wesley, aged 16 years, should have received £l/7/6 per week; up to October 17. 1936, he received 15/- per week, and after that date he received 17/6 per week. The other employee, Mulqueen, 19 years of age, should have received £2/17/6 • per week, but received £l/2/6. The deficiency had not been made good, hut there did not seem to be any possibility of that being done, as defendant was not continuing in the business, which was being closed. In the circumstances, said Mr. Hoskin, it was useless pressing for a penalty. The S.M. said that judgment, must be given for plaintiff, but in the circumstances it would be for a nominal amount, £1 in respect of each breach.
