[BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] (Received June 22, 8 a.m.) MELBOURNE. June 21. The hearing of the Union Company’s claim for £50.000 in connection with the Kakariki-Cardale collision, at Port Phillip on January 29. began tn the High Court to-day. The defendants are “the ship Caradale. her freight and cargo.” Defendants counter-claimed for £25,000. The collision resulted in the sinking of the Karakiki and the loss ol five lives. Plaintiff claims that the Kakariki was navigated properly in regard to safety. The Caradale neglected to keep a proper lookout, and failed to warn a change in course. She failed to stop or reverse when a collision must, ho apparent.

Defendants deny that the collision was caused or contributed to by negligence or improper navigation by the Caradale. and say the collision was caused solely by the negligent navigation of the Kakariki. which having become the crossing vessel, failed to keep out of the way of tin- Caradale.
