CRAWFORD DEFEATS MENZEL. , LATER. Crawford in the first round of the singles defeated Menzel by three sets to two (scores to follow). Crawford’s backhand was working perfectly in the early sets. His forehand placements were also fine, but Menzel caused worry with hard service and heavy top-spin drives. Both played clever tennis, but the similarity of tactics tended to dullness. The match lasted two hours twenty minutes. Bromwich, making his first appearance at Wimbledon, was opposed only by a good club player. The Australian was not very convincing. McGrath started’ shakily, and was unable to find a reply to Ellmer’s steadiness, but found touch in the second set, and thereafter outplayed his Swiss opponent. Playing on adjoining courts, late in the evening, Coojnbe and Stedman had comparatively easy wins. Andrews meets Crawford in the second round. Coombe meets McGrath. Stedman meets Nigel Sharpe. Players from twenty-seven nations are present at the championships. The biggest feature of the day after Crawford’s win was the young South African, Eedes’, defeat of Stefani, partly due to a robust service. Lysaght surprisingly took a set from Cramm, but once the German became familiar with the grass surface, the Englishman was doomed.
