TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping

MEETINGS TO COME

June 26—Ashbfirton County. June 30 —Dannevirke Hunt. RACING AT OMOTO.

£2,169 TOTE INCREASE.

The Winter meeting of the Greymouth Jockey Club was held at Omoto on Saturday, in ideal weather, and in the presence of a large attendance. The track was heavy, and' though it had dried up a great deal with two days of sunshine, times were necessarily slow. The fields, except in the trotting events, were not large, but there was some good racing, and several useful dividends, besides one of over half a score paid by the winner of the second trot. The light harness events drew large fields, and provided interesting contests. Speculation was brisk, the sum of £5,156 being put through the totalisator, as compared with £2,987 at the .Winter meeting in 1934, and £3,428 at the corresponding fixture in 1933. The club did not race in the Winter of 1935 or 1936, so that •the figures for Saturday last showed the satisfactory increase of £2,169, as compared wiith the corresponding meeting in 1934. Features of the meeting were the successes of A. E. Ellis, who rode three winners, and A. Messervey, who piloted two winners, these two Riccarton horsemen accounting for all the events on the galloping programme. J. B. Pearson (Riccarton) .was the most successful trainer, leading in two winners, Wine Card and' Paper Note, both of which he owns. R. Adamson (Riccarton), A. B. Spiers (Kumara), and J. S. Shaw (Riccarton) bach trained one winner. J. Cldfk drove the winner of the first trot, Chieftainess, trained at Spreydoii by C. J. Allen, and L. Workman (Reefton) drove his own horse, Flying Heieh, td win the second light harness event. The principal event, the Grandstand Handicap,' was -vfroh by the Riccartbnowned and trained gelding, Maroha, who snatched' victory on the post by a nose from the West Coaster, Potent .(now trained at Riccarton), who was unlucky to go under in the last stride, after making all the pace. The hot favourite, Sweet Agnes, was never galloping well, and finished last of the lour starters, though only a nose behind the third horse. The principal sprint event was won convincingly by Land Raid, owned and trained by A. B. Spiers, Mayor of Kumara.' He was turned out in fine order, and after gaining the leader, /Arrowrose, once they had settled down on the home stretch, the Night Raid gelding came away to win by two lengths.

The meeting was splendidly conducted bl’ the officials of the chib, headed by the President, Mr T. E. , Coates, and the Secretary, Mr M. J. Fogarty,.the programme being runoff right up to scheduled time. The starting of Mr G. Reed, of Riccarton, again gave every satisfaction. ’ The Greymouth Civic Band contributed a programme during the afternoon. Detailed results were: —

Roy Bun and Maka Ahi were first to show out, and past the stand the .first time Roy Bun led Maka Ahi, Paper. Note, Hunting Bag and Gold Boy. The order remained the same along the back, except that Gold Boy moved up and Paper Note, on the rails, came through, as Maka Ahi dropped out. Paper Note came up to Roy Bun on the home turn, and in the straight was not troubled to win by three lengths from Roy Bun, with Gold Boy, who was third into the straight, six lengths away third. The Kaiata Trot proved an easy thing for the Reefton owned and trained Flying Helen, who returned a dividend of over half a score, easily the biggest, of the day. She was always in front, and won decisively, from the second favourite, Chieftainess. who made no impression on the winner in the straight. Pukeuri and Tagua failed to strike their hopples, and Canadian Prince was again slow to get. going. Flying Helen ■was first to show out, and she led past tho stand the first time from Chieftainess, Bridget Borough, and Kato Bingen, with a break to Streamline and Nahlin. The order was practically the same along the back and across the top, and Flying Helen led into tho straight from Chieftainess. Bridget. Borough, Streamline, and Nahlin (well back). Monipere was installed a good favourite for the Final Handicap, and he looked a good thing beaten, for after being left at the post, he made up some five or six lengths going down the back, but was unable to reach the winner, Primak, who was only third choice, after a poor showing in a hack race earlier in the day. The hack race, however, was run over two seconds faster. Monipere, after he and Carfex had caused some delay at the barrier, was left some six lengths, and Metal Bird, Arena and Primak led out. Into-the back-, Messervy took Primak to the front, and he led Metal Bird by half a length, along the back stretch, with Arena, Emmeline Girl and Carfex next, and then Monipere and Chaste. The favourite made up a lot of ground going down' the back and across the top, but Primak was still in front at -the straight entrance, with Metal Bird next, and then Monipere, making up his ground fast. Monipere did not race too kindly under pressure in the straight, and he was decisively beaten by Primak by a length and a-half, with Metal Bird, who had a good run throughout, but failed to come on in his usual style in the straight, a similar distance away, third. Carfex was half a length away fourth, and then came Emmeline Girl. Chaste was slow away, and Arena had had enough before they had covered five furlongs. Tote £ 1070.

NOTES ON THE' RACING

[special to “star,”]

AUCKLAND, June 21

No less remarkable than the consistent failure of favourites, at the Auckland trots, on Saturday was the repeated success of horses, who were No. 2 on the card, there being four winners and a second of that number, in the first five races. The only windividend declared not of two figure dimensions was thta of Native Tree, the Hastings trotter, who proved more than a match for the local fancy, Swordsman. Winner Hooted:

There was a demonstration and a counter-demonstration following the winning of the last race by King’s Play. He had been a staunch favourite for the Adams Memorial, but was never going kindly in that race, and was eventually pulled off when the position was hopeless with a round to go. Backers waited an hour until after dark, while the Stewards deliberated, but the inquiry was adjourned until Monday. Wide Form Gaps:

The only previous win of Bingen Sun was in the same rac.e the Winter Handicap. a year ago. Similarly Charteris Bay and Gnid Hairst won the succeeding events, bridging oven wider form gaps.

Munga Tangi also had been absent from the winning list for a year before he turned up in the Marconi Handicap. which he captured like a good one. Won on Merits:

Our McKinney, who made all his own running, won tho Cup on his merits, although the heavy going, in which winners were going about five seconds to the mile slower than their handicaps, undoubtedly helped him. Until the last three months, he had run like a non-stayer, but he preluded his win by two seconds in two-mile events. He was inclined to boro in. but his gait was not checked by that inclination. Star Pronto and Nervie's Last attended the winner, entering the straight, but ho was too solid for them. Ironside and Stirling Lady lay handy without ever being really dangerous, and Prince Pedro dropped out of a good position, with two furlongs to go. Gold Dredge and Ironside werb closest ' to the placed division. King’s Play Succeeds: I Navy Blue, Kenworthy, and Kewpie’

King were early prominent in the Cornwall Handicap, but King’s Play ran up fast in the straight to be on terms with Navy Blue passing the stands. It was apparent that King’s Play would be very hard to beat, but Navy Blue was still with him at the home turn, where Kenworthy and Kewpie’s King were handy. King’s Warrior eventually beat the last-named for third, and then came Navy Blue, Bonny Azure, who had no chance from her mark, and Star Pronto.

KING’S PLAY INQUIRY.

STEWARDS SATISFIED.

AUCKLAND, Julie 21.

“Evidence produced by the owner, Mr Wilfred Johnstone, and confirmed by the totalisator proprietors, shows that, the connections of King’s Play had a substantial investment on the horse in the Adams Memorial Cup. and a much sinallei* investment in the Cornwall Handicap, and it is the unanimous opinion of the stewards that the placings of the judge in the Cornwall Handicap shall stand.” This was the decision of the Judicial Committee of the Auckland Trotting Club, this morning, after an inquiry into the running of King’s Play in the Adams Cup. and the Cornwall Handicap, al Alexandra Park, on Saturday. In the former event, in which he was .a staunch favourite, King’s Play failed to pace evenly over the first mile and a quarter, and was then pulled up, being nearly a furlong behind the leaders.

TROUBLE WITH HOPPLES. Seen after the inquiry, Mr Johnstone stated that the hopples used on King’s Play were fairly new, and during the race stretched from two to three inches beyond the proper length, which, the horse requires. After the race, with the permission of the Stipendiary Steward, the hopples were tightened up to their previous length, and consequently the gelding was able to pace much more evenly. Incidentally King’s Play cut himself on the off fore coronet in the Cup, and permission was sought to puit a quarter boot on him, prior to the Cornwall Handicap, but this could not be granted, for, under the rules, he had to compete in the same gear in which he ran in the Cup. Mr Johnstone added that he had £6O on King’s Play, £5O for a. win, and £lO for a place, in the Cup, but no investment on him in his second start. However, his son. Wallace, had £l5 on the gelding in the Cornwall Handicap, while the driver, M. Stewart, had £5 on him.

WRONGLY HANDICAPPED,

[SPECIAL TO “STAB.”]

AUCKLAND. June 21

Mr A. E. Commons, Stipendiary Steward, has lodged an objection to the stake being paid to Charteris Bay, the winner of the Mangere Handicap, as he was allegedly wrongly handicapped, having won off 3.40. when his assessment was 3.39 for a mile and a half. Tho Auckland Committee has forwarded the protest to the Trotting Association.
