AUCKLANDER’S “SWELL TRIP”
SEEING FRIENDS OFF [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] z AUCKLAND, June 11. “Sure, I had a swell trip, and everyone was simply marvellous, but I don’t like being locked in my cabin,” said a 23-year-old Aucklander, sft 2in., and vivacious, on her arrival by the Monterey from Los Angeles. Officially, she was a stowaway. With an American accent, she said that she went aboard the Mariposa, when last in Auckland, with the idea of farewelling friends. While seated in a deck-chair, she realised that the vessel was moving cut. While wondering what to do, she fell asleep, and woke up next morning, shivering, out at sea. She reported to the captain, and was landed at Pago Pago, and detained until the arrival of the Monterey. On the homeward trip, she was kept under lock and key, in a two-berth cabin, and was handed over to the authorities in Auckland.
! APPEARANCE IN COURT. AUCKLAND, June 11. , A woman, described as a waitress, 23, residing at Auckland, was charged before Mr. Orr Walker, with stowing away on the Mariposa, on May 31. She pleaded guilty. The police said they did not accept the story told by the girl as to how 'she was carried away on the Mariposa, and surrendered next morning to ; the officers. They that she be remandejd in custody. The total expenses involved were £3-. Mr. Aekins, for the accused, said that while farewelling friends, the girl had a good many drinks, and became ‘confused.
