MANY MORE ITALIANS

An analysis of data obtained in the census of 1923, which was> completed 1 in Canberra to-day. shows a. remarkable increase in the Italian population. of Australia, and. also in the' number of half-caste Australian aborigines, hut shows a decrease in the number of Asiatics. Between 1921 and .1933 the number of Italians in Australia was more than doubled. At the time of the 1933 census the number of Italians in Australia was 17,658, an increase of 12,755 compared witli the number recorded in the. census of 1921. The increase’ in the Italian population of the Commonwealth was many times greater than the increase in the nationals of any other foreign country.
A pronounced decrease in the number of Asiatics in Australia, and particularly of Chinese, is recorded. The Chinese population of the Commonwealth at. the time of the census was only 7792. a decrease of 6007. compared! witli the number at the preceding census.
The nationality and race tables compiled from the census reveal that whereas the half-caste aboriginal population increased from only 10,113 to 11,536 persons between 1911 and 1921, it had nearly doubled at. the time of the 1933 census, the total half-caste aboriginal population being 20,620.
