D. O’Connor, who won on Dropped Catch at Waimate, will ride the W* n ' ning Hit gelding in the highweight Jiandicap at Oamaru. Dropped Catch requires a strong horseman, and O’Connor tilled the bill admirably at Waimate.

Davolo Returns: Davolo 'was on the track at. Riccarton on Monday, his first appearance since his retirement early in March on account of strangles. He looks in good health, and it is intended to give him a race at Oamaru, though the Pombal gelding cannot be at his best for some time.

Jumper: It is reported from Riccarton that Sparmarch has become affected in the wind, and is to be operated on. It is hoped he will be in work again soon, in preparation for jumping races before the end of the Winter campaign. The son of Spear Dance and Lady March showed a lot of promise as a jumper last season.

Looks Strong Candidate: The manner in which Lord Vai is schooling suggests that he will be more than a possibility in this year’s big hurdles. He has had, a good spell and when he cams' back he had freshenedVup considerably. The Valkyrian —Sweet Colleen gelding will run at Te "Rapa next month and the racing there should give some idea of his prospects.

Westland Club: Westland Racing Club has decided to give up its practice of holding the bulk of its racing at Christmas. At a rheeting of the Committee on Monday evening, it was resolved to retain the Boxing Day meeting, but to hold two days’ racing at the end of February. The new dates are expected to fit in better with Canterbury race days.

Bonnie Rollox: Trentham’s new steeplechaser, Bonnie Rollox, purchased in Melbourne a few months ago by Mr R. J. Murphy, has not been schooled since his arrival from Australia, but he will probably be sent over a few fences this week, as. it is intended to race him at the Egmont meeting. Bonnie Rollox has never yet encountered going such as he will experience in New Zealand in the Winter, and it remains to be seen how he will handle it. P. Burgess has been engaged to ride him during the season.

A Sydney Winner: Dutiful, a -winner in Sydney on Saturday, is a three-year-old gelding by Captain Bunsby from Chelae, by Cyklon. Chelae is the dam also of Limulus and Swift and Sure, and is a. sister to Herowinkle, dam of Hall Mark, and also a sister-in-blood to another Melbourne Cup winner, Trivalve. Dutiful was purchased as a yearling at Trentham by J. T. Jamieson for Mr J. Harris, of Sydney, for 250 guineas, and is trained by Jamieson for Mr Harris.

Another Trip: The Melbourne Cup winner, Wotan, has had only light tasks allotted him by his trainer, J. Fryer, in the hope of freshening him up for the Egmont Club’s meeting next month. It is Messrs Smith Brothers’ intention to run him at the meeting. Fryer is becoming a regular visitor to Australia, having since 1929 crossed the Tasman on six different occasions. Some time in June a visit is contemplated for Wotan and other members of his team. International will probably he included in the pai'ty taken from Fryer’s stable.
