MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEET;
The West Coast Rugby Union’s Management Committee met last evening, there being present: Messrs. J. Guy (acting-Chairman), F. Eggleton, W. G. Scott, H. Silcock, T. O’Donnell, A. M. Jamieson, W. Williams, F. W. Baillie, T. P. Ryan, J. Kyle and J. E. Joyce (secretary). The Te Kinga Club wrote explaining that the reason why they played three senior players in their junior team against Stars on last Saturday week, was that they were under the impression that as the players hud not played senior grade for three seasons, there was no necessity for them to be reclassified.
Mr. Baillie moved that the explanation bo accepted, but that the game be declared "no match,” and be replayed at the end of the season should it have any bearing on the result of the competition. Mr. Ryan seconded the motion. Mr. O’Donnell said it was not right that the Te Kinga Club should go unpenalised. They played senior players against Stars, and should incur some penalty. .Mi'. Baillie said that Te Kinga won the match,, and were being penalised in losing points. The motion was carried.
The Celtic Club’s application for permission to print and sell programmes for all representative fixtures at Greymouth during the season, was granted. The Celtic Club wrote stating that they had booked Schaef’s Hall for their annual ball on August 25, the night of the match between West Coast —Buller and the Springboks at Greymouth, and asking if the Union would regard the ball as one of the official entertainments to the visitors. It was decided to suggest 'to the Celtic Club that they conduct the ball under the auspices of the Union. The Westland Sub-Union wrote suggesting an interchange of Westland and Greymouth'referees this season, and nominating D. Breeze and J. Rutland as suitable referees.
It was decided to approve the proposal, and to refer the letter to the Referees’ Association, asking them for nominations of referees available for visits to Hokitika.
Three applications for reinstatement to the code were received, and it was decided to forward them to the New Zealand Union with a favourable recommendation.
The matter of preparing the Omoto Racecourse ground for Saturday next was left to Messrs. Joyce, Ryan and Eggleton. On the motion of Messrs. Ryan and Jamieson, it was decided that the senior competition be reviewed at the end of the first round.
The junior competition was fixed for two rounds, and the third grade for three rounds. Mr. Baillie raised the question of the appointment of a senior selector or selectors. He said that with representative matches coming on early this year, the Union should now appoint its selector or selectors. Mr. Ryan moved that all senior clubs be asked to forward nominations for senioi' selectors to the Union, by next Tuesday night. Regarding the suggestion for a sole selector, he said the Union’s district was so scattered that a sole selector was hardly practicable. The Union, however, could decide on the number of selectors they would have when nominations were received. Mr. O’Donnell said that was the first occasion in his experience that there had been a suggestion to ask the clubs to nominate selectors. He was not against the proposal, but he did not see why they should alter their custom of appointing selectors, without reference to clubs. They had not asked clubs to nominate junior selectors this season.
Mr. Ryan said he had only made the suggestion. If the Union decided to call nominations they would be doing only what all the major Unions did in the matter of selectors. The motion w r as seconded by Mr. Scott, and carried. On the motion of Messrs. Baillie and Rvan, it was decided to call nominations for a fourth grade competition, players to be under seventeen years of age. Mr. Silcock stressed the need for a fourth grade competition, of a class that was not too high, to cater for boys W’ho left primary schools and did not go on to high school. On the motion of Messrs. Ryan and O’Donnell, ft v.’as decided that in view of the early representative matches with Buller and Canterbury, endeavours be made to- arrange matches between Westland and Greymouth, and Inangahua and South Westland, at Greymouth, for May 29.
