SOCCER. At the weekly meeting of the Westland Football Association, at which Mr F. M. Smyth presided, advice was received from the New Zealand Association that the entries for the’ Chatham Cup competition would close on May 15, the entrance fee remaining at £2/2/-. The following fixtures were arranged for the week-end: — Senior grade: Runanga v. Berlins, at Reefton; Technical Old Boys v. Marist, at Recreation Ground, 3 p.m. Third grade: Technical B v. Technical C., at Recreation Ground, 10.30; Technical A v. Runanga, at Recreation Ground, 1.45. IKAMATUA GOLF CLUB. Owing to unfavourable weather the official opening of the -Ikamatua. Golf Club was postponed until next Saturday, when mixed foursomes will be played. During the week-end a medal match was played and the best scores were: W. O’Malley, senr., 83, 19, 64; W. J. McCarthy 87, 19, 68; I. Watt 94, 24, 70. The following is the draw for the Waipuna Cup, to be played at 1.30 p.m. on Sunday between Ikamatua and Waiuta (Ikamatua first mentioned): — A. J. H. GREY RIFLE CLUB.
The Grey Miniature Rifle Club held a practice shoot on the club’s range last evening, on the 20yds metric target. Some good scores were registered. F. Molloy shot a fine 79 to top score. The following were the leading scores: —F. Molloy 79, J. Molloy 78, J, Scorgie (junr.) 76, T. Nankervill 76, M. Ellery 74, L. Chapman 74, J. Scorgie 71, E. R. Moss 70, R. Simmers 69, G. Smith 78, L. Hughes 77, W. Hamilton 76, S. Sharman 75, P. Thomson 74, R. Hamilton 72, J. Phillips 71, J. Cowie 69. The competition and championships shooting will start next week, with the first competition for Mrs Bradshaw’s trophy.

LONDON, April 27.
Commenting on the return of the Marylebone cricketers, Thomas Moult, in the “Daily Telegraph’’ says he gathers that the team regards .the Australian wickets as mainly responsible for the defeat. Moult, describes a chunk of the Melbourne wicket which he brought home, as a small black ball of cast iron, with the peculiar virtue of a tendency to crumble as the pitch wears. POLO

A committee arranging the anniversary celebrations in 1938, is sending an invitation for a New Zealand polo team to visit Sydney on that occasion.
