ANZAC DAY HOLIDAY
EMPLOYERS AND AWARD [per press association.] AUCKLAND. April 26. Nearly all clothing manufacturing firms in Auckland hound by awards affecting female employees, which prescribe that when Anzac Day falls on a Sunday a holiday must be observed on the Monday following, carried on their operations to-day. In doing so, they contend that as a statute fixes the observance of Anzac Day on April 25, the Court cannot override such legislation and they challenge the ruling of the Labour Department that the provisions of awards must be followed on the subject. Other reasons, however, influenced in many instances the decision to carry on manufacturing to-day. Many are behind with orders and felt it necessary to endeavour to keep faith with their customers. Male workers are not covered by the awards providing for the alternative observance of Anzac Day. Therefore, to have given only female employees a holiday would have meant disorganisation in factories.
