SENTENCE OF DEATH SEQUEL

LONDON. March 2

After John Mullins, 38, tt labourer, of no fixed address, had pleaded guilty at Leeds Assizes yesterday to stealing jewellerv and other articles, it. was staled tiiat in 1918 he was sentenced io death by a general Held court-mar-tial for murder while on active service. Because of his youth, the sentence was commuted to penal servitude for 20 years.

luspr. Webster said that of his sentence Mullins served six and a half years, and when he came out ol prison he began house breaking on a wholesale scale. He was sentenced to three rears' penal servitude at Leeds .and later to three years' penal servitude al Liverpool, to be followed by live years' preventive detention as an habitual criminal.

’l’he inspector added that Mullins, who had carried on a career of clime since he was 12, had been out of prison on license 11. weeks when he committed the offence to which he now pleaded guilty. Mr. Justice Singleton sentenced Mullins to nine months’ hard labour.
