WESTLAND PROGRESS LEAGUE [OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, March 16. The monthly meeting of the Westland Branch of the Canterbury Progress League was held last night, Dr. Teichelmann presiding over a good attendance. Letters were received from the Hokitika Borough Council and the Westland County Council in reply to representations concerning the number of unlicensed hawkers that “work” the town and country and suggesting that a definite charge be laid so that a test case can be made. A general discussion ensued on the definition of a. hawker. It was contended by some that a hawker was a person who went from dooi- to door either selling goods or soliciting orders for goods and not residing or having place of business in the territory thus canvassed. _ . A deputation from the Business Men’s Association, Mr. W. H. Stopforth and Mr. Miller, waited upon the meeting to enlist the aid of the branch towards the application for a new Post Office at Hokitika. The present wooden structure was built in the early ’seventies. —It was decided to agree with the Association’s request and make representations to the member for the district and the department for a new Post Office. The meeting also decided to support the Association in endeavouring to get a more suitable railway service on the Ross line on Friday evenings. The secretary reported a credit balance of £l3. HARBOUR BOARD The monthly meeting of the Hokitika Harbour Board was held yesterday. Present: Messrs M. Houston, J. J. Mclntosh, E. W. Heenan, W. E. Richards, Michel. The signalman reported that considerable shoaling has taken place at tlie bcH* Mrs. *M. E. Croawel, applied for section along the spit. Members were unanimous that no more sections should be let in this area, as the Board might require the area. The application was refused. Hon. W. Parry advised that a, general meeting of local bodies will be held in the Town Hall on March 22. — All the members were requested to attend.

The Secretary New Zealand Harbour Boards’ Employees Union wrote setting out conditions of time and wages to be asked for. —The conditions were considered far beyond the capacity of this Board to accept and it was resolved that a reply be sent to the Harbour Boards’ Association to that effect.

Accounts totalling £4OO/17/6 were passed for payment. The Treasurer reported that the Bank account shows a debit of £2OO. ' WESTLAND HOSPITAL BOARD. At a meeting of the Westland Hospital Board, there were present Messrs T. D. Duff (chairman), W. Jamieson, E. L. Park, E? W. Heenan, J. A. Murdoch, A. R. Elcock. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs N. Brown, W. H. Evenden and H. T. Parry. A vote of sympathy was passed to the relatives of the late George Small. Mr E. E. Raine was temporarily, appointed to the position of porter at the Hospital.

An application from the Hokitika Aero Club for the presence of the ambulance at Southside Aerodrome during the Aero Pageant on Friday and Saturday, March 19 and 20, was granted.

It was resolved to apply for a bank overdraft of £2OOO.

A letter was received' from the Board’s architect, Mr Trendrove, advising that the new Nurses’ Home would be completed and ready for occupation within two months.. The successful tenderers for meat supply for the ensuing six months were Andrews Bros., and for bread Mr J. Hurren.

The acceptance of tenders for the supply of fish was held over. The financial statement for February was:—Receipts, £l3ll/1/6; expenditure, £1350/3/11. Accounts amounting to £1317/5/1 were passed for payment. The Matron reported for the month of February: The month proved fairly busy, the highest number of beds on any one day being 81, and the lowest 59. The average for the month was 72.6, number of X-rays 60, operations 51, electrical and massage treatments 232, screenings 3. Holidays: Miss M. E. Anderson is on annual leave from February 23. Holidays due: Misses McNamara and M. Rodgers. Sick leave: Miss Barrowman has been advised to give ijp nursing for six months. It will be necessary to appoint a probationer in her place. Misses Hausemann and Martin (domestic staff) on annual leave, are being relieved by Misses N. Oates and V. Lyes. It is with regret I have tp report the death, under very distressing circumstances, of Wardsman George Small, an old and valued servant of our hospital. Medical Superintendent's report:— Remaining in hospital 31/1/37, 75; admitted during the month, 70; treated during the month, 145; remaining in hospital on 28/2/37, 59.

HOKITIKA R.S.A. The monthly meeting of the Executive Committee of the Hokitika R.S.A. was held on Monday evening. Present: Messrs W. E. Brown (chairman), G. A. King, P. Whitford, F. Ashley, B. Cropp, C. Hart, Samson, Gilchrist, F. McGregor. It was decided, owing to the unsettled weather, and the lateness of the season, to defer the proposed picnic to next Summer. It was decided to entertain the Ladies’ Committee and helpers and to celebrate the 21st birthday of the Association with a banquet and dance on Wednesday, April 28. The customary arrangements for Anzac Day parade and service were made. It was decided to organise the sale of poppies in the town and country district by the help of members and school teachers on the day preceding Anzac Day. ' The President gave a summary of the meetings by the Executive held in South Westland and the formation of the district representatives at the camps at Weheka and in the Wataroa district.

The resignation of Mr Thornhill Cooper from the Executive on account of his transfer to Greymouth,

was accepted with regret. A motion of appreciation of his services was passed. It was decided to pay the annual hall fee, with a letter expressing a protest against the amount, thereof. Accounts amounting to £l/7/6 were pased for payment. Twelve new members were accepted. An application for replacement of lost medals was recommended. BUSINESS ASSOCIATION The executive committee of the Hokitika Business Men’s Association met last evening. Present: Messrs W. H. Stopforth, Miller, G. Bryant, Kelleher, T. Seddon, T. Cumming, W. J. Richards and C. H. Lawn. An apology for absence was received from Mr. W. J. Bruce. It was resolved that a remit be sent to Mr. J. O’Brien M.P., asking his support for the provision of a new post office for Hokitika, the present one being considered inadequate, old, and inconvenient. The Chairman and Secretary were empowered to operate the account to be opened in the Hokitika Savings Bank. Mr. Bryant reported on a very satisfactory number of applications for membership of the Association.
