CANTERBURY v. WELLINGTON. [PER press association.] WELLINGTON, March 15. As the South Island athletes returning home after competing at the New Zealand championships at Auckland were in Wellington to-day, the challenge mile relay race, run annually between teams of four representing the Canterbury and Wellington Amateur Athletic Clubs, was held. McCashin (880yds). The Canterbury team had much the better of the first, three distances, and when the Christchurch man handed tho baton on to his team mate for the last dash, Canterbury had a clear start of 20 yards. The Wellington man ran a splendid race, and just failed to catch his man on the tape. It was such a close finish that one of the judges declared for a dead-heat, but was over-ruled. Canterbury thus won the Etevenaux Cup by the narrowest possible margin. An 80-yard's dash, in which Canterbury and Wellington runners competed, was won. by J. Nelligan (2yds). E. Newburgh (3yds) was second, and A. Welply (scr) third. There were seven starters. Time, 8 l-ssec.
