To Ride at Westport:
G. Humphries has accepted an engagement to ride Full Throtle and Forum in their engagements at the Westport meeting, on Saturday and Monday next. Both horses race in the Hunter-Webb livery. Should Not Be Long:
Tareha shaped well enough on the flat at Napier Park to suggest that he will make his presence felt when put back to hurdling. A fast and clever jumper, ho is always hard to beat over short journeys, when at his best. Not Definite:
Apparently O. Cox has by no means definitely decided on a southern trip for the Thompson winner, Friesland, and Lowenberg at Barter. Both have been nominated for Wairarapa, while Lowenberg is also entered for Feilding.
To Race in Australia: Mr. J. S. McLeod’s Limond.colt Only One, who was narrowly defeated by Smokp .Screen in the Pacific Handicap on the opening day of the Wellington meeting, will return to Sydney shortly for further racing.
For Suva: The Auckland jockey A. G. Murray will leave shortly for Suva, where he is to ride and train for Mr. A. H. Murray. Born in Australia, Murray came to New Zealand at an early age and met with considerable /success. He has also ridden in both Australia and India.
Change of Stablss: The one-time New Plymouth trained Royal Bengal, which of late has been trained by W. Corlett, is now an inmate of V. M. Collelo’s stable. He will do all of his future racing as a hurdler, at which he showed distinct aptitude when started a couple of times last season.
English Seasons: The flat racing season in England opened this week, and the first important handicap will be the Lincolnshire on Wednesday. The jumping season practically comes to a close this week, With the running of the Liverpool Grand National Steeples, at Aintree, on Friday. Added to the List:
x Quadroon has been gelded following his, rather disappointing form in his last few starts, and will be set aside for a lengthy spell. , This handsome Nigger Minstrel three-year-old gives every /indication of being above the average, and next season should find him graduating to the best open company. Ae he stays on really well an important handicap should not be beyond him.
The Railway Winner: Dungarvan, a four-year-old son of Colossus, probably the best representative yet cf his sire, who has deserved letter chances than ho has so far had, has been rarely consistent since he began racing fifteen months ago, for now liis record reads 13 wins and 10 minor placings in 33 starts, resulting in stake-winnings of £2843/10/-. He is owned by his breeder, Mr. J. C. Kennedy, of Dannevirke. Yearlings for South Africa:
The two yearlings which were purchased by Sir Joseph Robertson have been shipped to Sydney, en route to Cape Town. Before being shipped the colts were registered, and at the request of their new owner they received Maori names. The colt by Hunting Song from Crisis was named Ariki and the colt by Posterity from Impetuous was registered' as Tohunga.
Singapore Consignment: The consignment of yearlings now at the Trentham stables being handled and broken before shipment to Singapore is being added to from time to time, and the total is now 19. Two recent purchases are a chestnut colt by Bambury from Pelagia and a bay colt by Spear Dance from Marble Town. The Bambury yearling is dfe first colt to be sired by the Englishbred horse, who was mated with four mares when a three-year-old. Smoke Screen:
Tho Trentham winner, Smoke Screen, is a bay son of Limond and the Thespian—Cowl mate Curtain, and he is thus a full-brother to Gladswood, the defunct Loud Applause, and Pelmet, and a close relative io Veilmond. Mr. Russell Grace, of Wanganui, went to 600 guineas at the national sales last year, to secure this fine sturdy youngster and tho outlay, to which ho has already contributed £520 in gross stakes, should be repaid many-fold be-
fore tho next season or so is over.
Through the three-year-olds of the coming term promise to be a. solid lot. Smoke Screen will be a formidable contender for any classic honours. Back to Hurdling:
An interesting entrant for the hurdle events each day at Feilding is Hunting Queen, which has not started over the battens for almost a year and a half. So far this mare has made only two appearances over the battens, showing most, impressive form. In the spring of last season she ran third to Spender rnd Kaola at Rangitikci, and followed this up by winning at Feilding. The' field she beat was only a moderate one, but rhe scored in a manner that stamped her out as a high class hurdler in the making. Now only a five-year-old, she should have a great future as a jumper. Silver Ring’s Form: Mr A. H. Walton’s chestnut. Silver Ring seems to have recovered from the shoulder trouble that he suffered on his return from Melbourne, and he ran well enough at Wellington, to
draw attention to his prospects in the Great Autumn Handicap at Riccarton, He fras hale and hearty, and though he did not get a good position early, in either of his'races, probably due to lack of a few gallops, the manner in which he was finishing on, under his big weights, showed that he is far from a spent force. Silver Ring was running on in eighth place on Saturday, but, more important, he was less than three lengths behind the champion three-year-old, Wild Chase, who was fourth. The racing he had at Wellington should work a big improvement in Jim Stewart’s charge, and even with 9.6 he cannot be counted out of the Riccarton Great Autumn. Silver Ring, on account of his three successes in the Spring, in Australia, will carry the full penalty of lOlbs in the C.J.C. Challenge Stakes, to be run on March 30. His weight will be 9.11. Entered Select List:
In his success in the St. Leger, at Trentham, Wild Chase added his name to the select list of horses who have won both the N.Z. Derby and N.Z. St. Leger Stakes. . Two years ago Sporting Blood took the two classics, and ’the last Ivors e to do so previous to Sporting Blood was Commendation in 1927. Wild Chase consolidated his claim to be ranked'as the best three-year-old of the season on performances in the Dominion. During the present term he has won seven races and been second twice in 10 starts, and his record for the two seasons racing comprises 13 wins and 6 minor plac'ngs in 22 starts for £4735 in! stakes, of which £2870 has been earned this season.
The Thompson Winner: The runner-up last year, and winner of the Thompson Handicap at Trentham last Thursday, Friesland, is by no means an attractive-looking gelding, but handsome is as handsome does, and it. takes a good horse to win fivo handicap races in line in open company. A five-year-old brown gelding, Friesland is a son of imported Friarsdalo, who was by the late King George V’s favourite, Friar Marcus. His dam is the Flaxmere-bred Demosthenes —Los Vegas mare Fluency, who was sold by Mr. W. G. Stead as a two-year-old in Australia and proved an excellent stayer, winning among other races the Villiers Stakes, Summer Cup, and Anniversary Handicap at Randwick. Fluency’s dam (Los Vegas) was by Boniform from La Valiere, by Seaton Delaval from Chavante, and this is a colonial family that has produced many high-class/ performers, among others Client,. Gay Ballerina, Athens 11., Nanette, Quixotic, Delight, Cimabue, Passion Fruit, etc. The family, which descends from Josephine, earned some notice a year or two ago by the refusal of the Australian Stud Book Committee to admit its representatives to the Australian .Stud Book. Fluency was acquired for the stud in Australia, and Friesland’s owner-trainer (O. Cox) secured her Friarsdalo offspring privately as a yearling from his breeder, Mr. Otway Faulkner, when he was in Sydney a few . years back with Golden Hair. When first put in training at Hawera Friesland gave very little promise, but ho developed later, and he has been a consistent performer during the last twelve months, particularly at distances round about a mile. His record now. comprises 13 wins and 6 minor placings in 32 starts, and in stakes he has earned £2BBB.
AUCKLAND CONTROVERSY. ALLOCATING WIN-POOL SHARES. [SPECIAL TO “STAR.”] AUCKLAND, March 15. Some controversy has arisen over the allocation of shares from the winpool on the Awaiti Handicap at Paeroa, on Saturday, as the result of the dead-heating of Bronzette and Malagigi for chief honours, in the first division.
An announcement added to the conditions of the race, in the race-book, stated that win-dividends would: be paid in the proportion of 50 per cent, to the winner of each division. From that it could be inferred that Bronzette and Malagigi would share onehalf of the- amount available, and Llangollen, tho winner of the second division, the other half. However, each horse received one-third of the pool, by which Llangollen received less than had there been a straightouit win in the first division. The distribution of the dividends, in the circumstances which arose, is governed by special totalisator- regulations printed in another part of the race book. Here it is set out, that the Winner of, or horses dead-heating for first place in any division shall, for the purposes of the win-pool, be deemed to have dead-heated for first place, with the winners of, or horses dead-heating for, first place in other divisions. Under this* regulation, therefore, the pool was correctly allocated, but it seems hard that supporters of the winner of one division, should be penalised through art inconclusive result in another division.

Trotting MEETINGS TO COME March 17 —Wyndham. March 20—Cheviot. March 20—Wanganui. March 27, 29 —Hawera. March 27, 31 —N.Z. Metropolitan. March 30. —Westland, at Greymouth. April 3 —Taranaki. Disappointing: Wynan has a great private reputation, hut his short racing career so far has been disappointing, lie will not be so well sought after again, until ho shows his reputed ability with the colours up. Headed for Top: The Nelson Derby mare. Franz Derby, is headed for Dominion Handicap class, She trotted her two miles
'against the strong wind at Unit Park in 4.35 4-5, faultlessly. Two to Watch: Mauri McKinney is due to make an early return, judging by his form at the Wellington meeting. Fortcx was an unlucky runner at the last meeting at Hutt Park. She could not get out of a pocket until the race was as good as won by Reno. Re-handicaps: Toorak and Peter Silk, winners at Timaru on. Saturday, have each been penalised 48 yards for the Cheviot Cup and will start from 48 yards behind. ' Crocus: Provided her fall at Hutt Park has had no ill-effects. Crocus, a. maiden performer in F. J. Smith’s stable, should soon leave the novice ranks. She looked the makings of a pacer above the average in her engagement at Wellington. Anticipated: Glorietta’s win at Wanganui on Saturday, was well in keeping with her form at Hutt Park. The Brigand mare has apparently mended her race-day manners, and she should win more races. Aide de Camp: Aide de Camp will probably compete at the Wanganui Trotting Club’s second meeting, on Saturday, and off tho front in the principal event, he will not lack friends. Tempting offers for this pacer in recent months have met, a. flat refusal.
Decidedly Useful: The Rey de Oro pacer, Slippery Sam has proved a most useful performer, and is likely to leave his mark among the improvers. J. Davidson has fhe 'gelding hitting out freely, and he'.will bo watched in his early engagements.
A Good Chance:
In tho Waihora Handicap Trot at Motukarara, Finnebrogue finished fourth to Shrewdie, Post Haste and Intrigue; and 1 registered better than 3.27 .for the mile and a-half. He will he well -supported nt. the Cheviot meeting, on Saturday- next. WYNDHAM TROTS TO-MORROW. FIELDS AND PROSPECTS.
