WEST COAST WINS EASILY. SOUTH CANTERBURY MATCH. In perfect weather, on Saturday, the West Coast representatives retained •the Canterbury Minor Association s trophy, against, a challenge from South Canterbury, winning decisively, by 9.> runs on the first innings. The wicket had dried out considerably after Friday, but was somewhat tricky at the north end, the slower bowlers popping up disconcertingly. Morrison and Reynolds, who resumed for South Canterbury, added only two runs when Morrison went, and though Reynolds was at the wickets for some time, none of the remaining batsmen settled down. The side was dismissed for 94 runs, by the luncheon adjournment. The West Coast bowling was steady, and, aided by the uncertainty of the pitch, at one end', was never mastered. The home side’s fielding was sound, and few runs were given away. P. Allen came out with the bowling honours, four for 16, off 10 overs, and Vaughan bowled 12 overs, 10 maidens, for 2 runs and 2 wickets. West Coast opened their second innings in the afternoon, and though they lost one wicket without any runs on the board, there was never any danger of a collapse. M. Marshall batted soundly and confidently for 34, completing a fine double. A declara4 tion was made with the score 148 fo{ six wickets, and an hour and a-quarter to play. The South Canterbury bowling was not dangerous, and Purcell, mediumpaced right-hander, was the only one to keep the batsmen quiet. He bowled a splendid length, and his 14 overs, including five maidens, produced two wickets for ten runs. He had most of the batsmen subdued. Set to get 243 runs for an outright win, South Canterbury went for a hit in their second strike, and when stumps were drawn,, had 79 on the board for four wickets. There was a large attendance on Saturday afternoon, and some interesting if not exciting cricket was witnessed. Scores:—.
