MR. SAVAGE HONOURED

BY AUCKLAND LABOURITES

[PER press association.]

AUCKLAND, March 12

.Genuine enthusiasm marked a reception which was accorded the Prime Minister at a social gathering at the Labour Club to-night. The club rooms were crowded, the accommodation in the main social hall being overtaxed, and when Mr. Savage arrived, he had to run the gauntlet of hundreds of hand clasps and demonstrative greetings, while the main body of the members in the Social Hall took' up the refrain “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” During an interlude, Mr. S. Watene, a member of the club, presented Mr. Savage with a greenstone pendant on behalf of the Maori people of Tamaki. The importance of caring for the education and welfare of the children of the nation was emphasised by the Prime Minister, when officially opening the newly-constructed Richmond Road School. Speaking to about 1000 persons, Mr. Savage said that the children ever remained his first consideration; for it was upon them that civilisation depended. Schools of various types were required throughout the Dominion, and the Government was going to see that they were provided. He paid a tribute to the Minister of Education, Hon. P. Fraser, who, he said, was keenly interested in the welfare of the children, and the finest Minister to hold the office that New Zealand had known.
