[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

HOKITIKA, February 23.

The monthly meeting of the Westland branch of the Canterbury Automobile Association was held last evening, Dr. E. Teichelmann presiding over an attendance of half a dozen, viz., Messrs H. F. Cooke, G. Sutherland, W. E. Richards, Rev. Murray Feist, A. E. Perry and the Secretary (Mr. G. Anderson. An apology was received for the absence of Mr. G. H. Champman who had been called to Welington. Five new members were nominated and elected.

The matter of service stations for the South Westland road was finalised in the appointment of Mr. G. A. Rae at Ross and Mr. R. K. Arnold at Wataroa.

Referring to the question of a camping site at Hokitika, the president reported that the reserve at North Sewell Street would be too costly as the *atcs would amount to £l7 annually. He mentioned an area of Crown land about 4 A acres between Whitcombe Square and the terrace; St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church reserve was also referred to. Enquiries are to be made respecting these areas.

The question of a motor road to the foot of the Waiho Glacier —held over from last meeting—was discussed. The secretary stated he had been making’-enquiries on the"subject from Messrs Graham Bros., of Waiho. A letter from them was read, and stated that though they had previously opposed such a road they now approved of the construction of one, providing the bush scenery is not destroyed. They suggested another route, with less difficulties could be selected for the road.

The chairman said the Public Works Department has had the matter in hand for some time.

It was unanimously resolved that this branch of the Association urge the construction of the road. General satisfaction is felt at the selection of Mr. W. Eastgate to attend the Coronation with returned soldiers, he being the first to volunteer here at the outbreak of the Great War.
