WOMEN SHOP-LIFTERS
LOSSES IN AUCKLAND.

AUCKLAND, February 16.
Two women, who embarked on a shop-lifting expedition, after consuming a bottle of beer in a city hotel on February 9, appeared 1 before Mr Wl R. McKean, S.M., at the Police Court, this morning, when they pleaded guilty. Ellen Barnes, 42, married, was charged with the theft of five frocks taken on three different dates from the same shop. Ida Norris, 33, housemaid, admitted seven charges of theft at three different shops, the articles including frocks, handbag, dressing gowns, pail’ of gloves, and a shopping bag.
Detective-Sergeant McHugh said it appeared that the two women had been systematically stealing. He added that shop-lifting in Auckland lately was becoming more prevalent. ’For the accused, Mr Meek said the women were not professional shoplifters.
Barnes was fined a total of £22/10/and Norris £;2O.
