ALSATIAN DOGS

HIGHER LICENSE FEE. [PER PBEBS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, December 18. “Breaking the ice,” as one member termed it, the Heathcote County Council, at its meeting this evening, decided to fix a special registration fee for Alsatian dogs in the county. The fees fixed were 2/G for working dogs, other dogs 10/-, and ,£1 for all dogs of the Alsatian breed. When, the County Clerk, Mr J. P. E. Veale, asked for a resolution fixing dog registration fees for 1937, Cr. C. Flavell suggested that Cr. J. F. Cracroft Wilson, with his interest in dogs, should move the fees. Mr Veale: The same as last year, 2/6 for working dogs, and 10/- for others, including Pomeranians? Cr. F. W. Freeman: And dachshunds? Cr. Wilson: And a fiver for Alsatians? The Chairman, Cr A. G. Williams: I think if people can afford to keep an Alsatian they should pay £l. Cr. Flavell: Have we power to do that? Has the Government done anything in the matter? Has anyone else done it? Mr Veale: There is nothing to stop it, although no one has yet taken such action. Cr. Flavell: Oh, well, if it is only a matter of breaking the ice, there is no reason why we should not. Cr. Freeman: Are there any Alsatians in the county? Mr W. W. Scarf, county inspector: There are two beauties that will not let you past the front gate. Cr. Wilson: I move that the fees be 2/6, £1 for Alsatians, and 10/- for other dogs. The motion was put and carried unanimously.
