BOXING

NICHOL DEFEATS SEMI

[PEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.]

AUCKLAND, September 13

Strenuous boxing was seen in a professional heavy-weight contest al the Town Hall last night, when Claude Nichol (Australia) 12st 61b, gained the decision over Semi, the champion of Fiji and Tonga, 13st 61b.. on points after a ragged 12 rounds’ bout. Besides being much the cleverer boxer, Nichol frequently forced the fight to his hard-hitting but very unscientific opponent. The winner’s superior ringcraft and footwork were assets which enabled him to turn the majority of Semi’s numerous mistakes to his own account, and win practically every round. The large attendance continually applauded Nichol’s determined boxing, and was well satisfied with the decision.

MICK HOWSON WINS

Mick Howson, of Greymouth, had his first professional fight on Saturday evening at Newcastle (N.S.W.). knocking out Ted Dawson, of Newcastle, in the fifth round of a ten rounds bout. The weights were: Howson list. 71bs. Dawson list. 11b. According to the wireless description, Howson impressed by his skill, and ability to take and deliver hard punches. He had Dawson down for nine in the fourth round, and made him take the count in the following round. In a letter received by his father, last week, Howson did not mention the forthcoming Newcastle engagement, but said he was in good form at Sydney, under the training of Pat. Gleeson. He had sparred with Rosenbloom, Palmer, Simpson (U.S.A.), and Kelly. Rosenbloom was so impressed that’ he wished to take Howson with him to Melbourne.
