NEGOTIATIONS WITH JAPAN

CANBERRA, July 20.
Sir Henry Gullett, Minister in charge of Trade Treaties, announced to-night that, the Japanese Consul, Mr. Murai. had informed him that Japan was prepared to renew trade negotiations with Australia on the basis of the existing trade position. Mr. Murai is awaiting instructions from Tokyo, and it. is -expected that negotiations will be resumed next week.

Mr. Paterson (Minister for the Interior), in discussing the Privy Council's judgment, said that it means that trade between the states must be free of the quota restrictions which the state Governments agreed to apply within their own borders. In other words, inter-state trade would be freer than intra-state trade, which was an impossible position.
