HOKITIKA. July 1. The. recent fresh in the ” river has had a very beneficial effe on the bar, which can now worked by shipping. A special meeting of the membe • of the Mothers’ Union in connection with the jubilee of the organisation throughout the world, was held yesterday. At 10 a.in., a service was held in All Church, the celebrant being Rev " . E. Davies. The meeting in the afteinoon was well attended. Mrs Davies presiding; Solos were sung by Miss Ada Lvnn. and pianoforte selections were played by Miss Gwen Jacobs, who also acted as accompamste. The monthly meeting of the Hokitika School Committee was held last evening. Present: Messrs A. C. Armstrong Chairman), James Phillips, J. Conning (Sec.). J. J. Breeze, W E. Richards. W. H. Shannon, A. Leslie. The chairman referred to the meeting held to organise festivities for the jubilee of the school. A committee was set up; however, funds were needed, and he suggested the Committee make a donation. It was resolved on the motion of Mr Shannon, seconded by Mr Phillips, that a temporary loan .of £5 be voted. The Awatuna School Committee wrote asking for attention to their school by the dental clinic. —Left in the hands of the Secretary and Chairman to-arrange. The Secretary of the School Committees’ Association wrote asking the support of members on behalf of Mr Morgan, for the vacancy on the Education Board. It was resolved to receive the letter, but the Committee disapproved of the School Committees’ Association endeavouring to influence members of Committees in the matter of the election of a member to the Board.
Mi* Richards, on. behalf of Mr J. J. Breeze, and himself, reported on visiting the school. He said the football ground was in a deplorable condition, being uneven, with rushes growing in patches and puddles about the ground. The senior boys were limited to a small area for playing, quite inadeqjiate. It was essential that something be done as soon as possible. in this respect. Several loads of gravel were needed for other parts of the grounds to fill up depressions where water lodged—lt was resolved to obtain ten loads of gravel. The Rector reported the roll number of the primary school as 330, average attendance 300.7. The Secondary Department roll 115, average 111.3. Nine had recently left to take up positions, and in all cases reference had been made to the school. He was pleased to see the Committee taking- up the jiosition of the playing fields, which urgently need attention. It was decided to invite the local members of the Board to view the grounds. The Rector urged that more interest be taken in the school sports by parents and friends. He also reported that since November last, when he opened an account in the Hokitika Savings Bank for school children, to date the account stood at £62/9/3, The Committee commended Mr Menzies for his efforts in inculcating thrift with the children. It was decided to provide glass doors for the High School Library shelves.
Messrs W. H. Shannon and H. W. R. Sweney were appointed visitors for the ensuing month.
HARBOUR BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Hokiitika Harbour Board was held last evening. Present: Messrs J. J. McIntosh,E. W. Heenan, H. L. Michel, F. Ross, W. E. Richards. In the absence of the Chairman, Mr Mclntosh was voted to the chair. A vote of sympathy was expressed to Mr Heenan (a member of the Board) who suffered a bereavement since last meeting. Mr Heenan thanked the Board. A similar vote was passed to the relatives of the late W. E. Williams.
The application of W. Friend for a section towards the beach was granted at a rental of £1 per annum.
The signalman reported the bar is in splendid order, and a straight channel out. The depth of water at the berthage had been increased by five feet for 200 feet, and 50 feet wide. The Secretary reported that the work of deepening the berthage had cost £519, some 6575 yards of gravel being handled. An enquiry was received from Mrs R. Goldird, of Wellington, who stated she was born two days before landing in New Zealand, landing on February 17, 1872, hut did not know at what port. Mr Wild reported looking up records, but could find no trace of such a name, only the names of saloon passengers _ being published. He, however, recommended the Emigration Department to look up its records for the name.
The usual resolution respecting the striking and collecting of the Harbour Board' rate was moved and passed. Accounts amounting to £9B/16/3, were passed for payment.
