KUMARA NOTES

[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

The Mayor presided at a public meeting at the Memorial- Hall last evening ,to consider ways and means of re-dperiihg the library.

The Mayor said he was sorry the attendance was not larger. However, those who had attended showed they had some interest in the welfare of the town. Mr Wilson had kindly offered his services to catalogue the books, and Miss Watson had consented to act as librarian, and Mr Langham had offered to assist in any way possible.

Mr Evenden said the library was originally started by a’ young men’s club 38 years ago, and had functioned until recently. For a year or so the Government had given- the library some assistance, and the Borough Council had occasionally made a grant.

The Mayor said he was in favour of forming a small committee of four —three of the public and one member oi the Council.

It was resolved, on the motion of Mr West, that the control of the library be handed over to the Borough. That Messrs'.Cl Evenden, 1 T. Wilton and Mrs Dewe together with a member of the Council, be a committee to take charge of the library, and that Miss Watson be appointed librarian.

The Mayor, in returning thanks to those who had attended the meeting, said he would, at all times, be only too pleased to render any assistance in his power to make the library a success.
