TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping MEETINGS’ to come. June 20, 23—Wanganui. June 20, 23—Napier Park. June 23—Opotiki (at Tauranga). June 20, 23, 24—Dunedin. In Capital Mck: R. G. Mateer*s charge, Ait* Commo dore, Who has been working well a Matamata, will strip in capital nick a the Opotiki meeting, on Saturday.

Landlubber Well: Landlubber ran six furlongs in 1.15 4-5, the last four in 50 secs., at Ellerslie on Saturday last. The Lucullus —Greyland gelding is on the minimum in the Borough Hack at Wanganui, on Saturday.

Engaged at Opotiki: Te Hai find Lord Vai, Ellerslie horses engaged at the Opotiki meeting on Tuesday next, have been galloping freely on the tracks. On Saturday last on the No. 2 grass at Ellerslie, they ran the last six furlongs of an eight furlongs assignment in 1.18 1-s—a good gallop. Te Aroha Pair:

Mr P. A. Swney’s pair, Lagoon and Mungacre came through the Ellerslie meeting in god trim, and further wins for this stable may yet be registered before the end of the racing season. Both are engaged at the Opotiki meeting on June 23.

AJ.C. Derby Candidate: It is likely that the promising colt Black Friar will be sent over to Sydney this spring, where, he is engaged in the A.J.C. Derby. This handsome son of Gascony revealed undoubted stamina in his races as a two-year-old and gives indications of developing into a fine stayer next season.

Well-Related: The Te Aroha owner, Mr A. E. Lennard, has named his rising two-year-old filly by King Lu—Autumn Rose, Regal Rose. She is well grown, and shows plenty of quality. There is reason to expect that she will prove a worthy relative to Master O’Rorke, Lucy Rose and Gay Rose. She is the last of the Autumn Rose (Soult— Vieux Rose) line, as the latter died in September, 1934.

Travelling* Agent; Travelling Agent haff been working steadily at Te Rapa in preparation for engagements ahead. He is set down for a reappearance at the Opotiki meeting on June 23, and in view of the fact that he is to be taken to Trentham for the winter meeting, interest will attach to his showing at Opotiki.

Has Improved; Pladie’s win at Hastings on Saturday is a further indication of his greatly improved' form. He should be one of the leading contenders for honours at the Wellington meeting next month. He was. ridden an excellent race by B. H. Morris, and came with a great run in the straight to cut down Pakanui, who was backed as unbeatable.

Matora Sold; Matoru, owned by Mr R. Hannon and trained at Te Rapa by J. F. Tutchen, has been sold to Mrs D. Levin, of Wellington, and will in due course enter the stable of J. S. Shaw at Riccarton. The Acre three-year-old will be brought south by Tutchen when he makes the trip to Trentham. Matoru proved himself a decidedly useful hack in Tutchen’s charge, and in his last four starts has won once, been once second, and twice third.

Absent from Track; King Mestor has been absent from the Ellerslie tracks since the Great Northern meetihg. He contested the Orakei Hurdle Race on the final day of that fixture and pulled up lame. The trouble lb'dked to Be serious, and •the King Lu gelding may be off the scene for- some time. The horse was just coming to his best and was a promising hdrdler. Promising Hurdler;

Blue Tiger was responsible for an impressive performance when he scored over hurdles at the last Dannevirke meeting at the first time of asking. Unfortunately he gave himself a knock, which put him aside for a week or two, biit is workiiig- freely again at Woodville and schooled well the other morning over fou,r fences. Blue Tiger’s next outing will be at Napier Park on Saturday, where he is engaged in the hurdle event. He will be ridden by 0. McGovern. Well-Bred Yearlings;

Further additions to F. Davis’s already large team bf youngsters are two from Mr T. H. Lowry’s Okawa Stud. A typical Hunting Song is the brown colt from Fintry, a daughter of Desert Gold by Chief Ruler, while the other is a half-sister to Gold Trail by Hunting Song from Pure Gold. This one is regarded as one of the most attractive rising two-year-old fillies seen this season. To Race at Wanganui:

Latest reports from Hawera state that Supreme Court has not been overtaxed of late, and is now carrying a litle more condition than he usually does. He has been shaping well in short sprints recently, and will be in good order for the Wanganui meeting, which opens on Saturday. So far, Supreme Court has not won a race beyond seven furlongs, but he is to be tried over longer distances at Wanganui, and has been paid up for the Balgowrie Hack, the mile and 110 yards, on the first day.

Iliad—Gesture Colt; Omarere, a two 7 year-old winner at Rosehill on Saturday, is Mr R. J. Murphy’s bay colt by Iliad from Gesture. He is trained by G. Price, and his success over Seven furlongs at this stage suggests that he will be welt seasoned for three-year-old races in the spring. Bred as he is there is no reason why Omarere should not be top class. His dam Gesture was our leading two-year-old and by Chief Ruler from Nottava, by Solferino from Stepka, by St. Leger—Stepfeldt, by Nord’enfeldt —Steppe, it is one of the most solid families in the New Zealand Stud Book. Omarere is engaged in the leading events for three-year-olds.

Leading Sires: At the end' of the autumn racing, Paper Money was just leading Hunting Song on the winning sires’ list for the present season, but the success of Hunting Song’s progeny in different parts of the Dominion during the last few weeks lias given him pride of place again with a fairly substantial

advantage over Paper Money, whose Stock are not partial to winter conditions. Apart from the Dunedin and Wellington meetings, the stake money to he distributed during the remainder of the season is not very considerable, and, as the progeny of Hunting Song are notoriously at home in the heavy going, it seems almost a certainty that the son of Hurry On will head the list of .winning sires for the fourth season in succession. Considering that Paper Money is now 20 years old, his feat in running Hunting Song so close for supremacy is a very creditable one. The position of the leading sires with amounts, including the Great Northern, Otaki and Ashburton meetings, is as follows:—Hunting Song, £12,681; Paper Money, £11,586; Chief Ruler, £8253; Lord Quex, £5946; Valkyrian, £5866; Iliad, £5679; Acre, £5639; Gay Shield, £5239; Mus(ketoon, £4705; Limond, £4595; Silverado, £4458; Shambles, £4351; Song Bird, £4076; Psychology, £4047; and Gainscourt, £4027. Considering that the oldest of his progeny are only three-year-olds, the performance of Iliad in figuring s’ixth on the list is good. The recently defunct Acre heads the colonial-bred sires, and of sires bred in New Zealand, the honoiirsj to date go to the sotuherner, Song Bird. Other New Zealand-bred sires that have done well are: Nigger Minstrel, £2858; Winning Hit, £2831; Raceful, £2692; and King Lu, £2660

RICCARTON NOTES POLYDORA GALLOPS WELL [special to “star.”] CHRISTCHURCH, June 16. Conditions at Riccarton were damp to-day, but the outside of the trial grass, which was in use for fast work, was not affected to any extent. Practically all of the local contingent booked to go to Wingatui on Thursday were seen in action, but there was nevertheless not a great deal of galloping against the watch. Dollar Bill and Greek Gold were sent seven furlongs, taking 39 3-5 for

he first three and 1.34 for the ful

journey. The latter appears as an acceptor for Dunedin, but is a doubtful visitor. His stable mate, Sea Fox, Will not make the trip, and it is not intended to race him until the Grand National meeting. Royal Gallant, assisted over the last half mile by Cleaner, ran nine furlongs in 2.1, the first five in 1.5. Cranford was held in restraint in covering seven furlongs in 1.33 1-5, the first three in 38. Madam Pompadour was let off with a strong working gallop over six furlongs. .. Fast Tinies: Capital ran the first two furlongs of a half-mile sprint along the back in 23 1-5, and the iull journey in 49 3-5, and later Fair Weather covered the same ground in 48. The latter is to' go to Wingatui, and wnl be ridden on Saturday by R. Beale. Pahu; with Coxcomb as a mate, ran six furiongs in 1.23. Courtyard, and Polygraph strode over seven furlongs in 1.35, and their stable mates, Royal Limond, Arctic Star and Lycidas were given easy work on the sand. Royal Limond still moves scratchily, and will be at a disadvantage at Dunedin. Should he not start on Saturday, R. Beale will ride Arctic Star in the open steeplechase. Doing Well: Red Top again impressed by beating Sisternia by a length at the end of six furlongs in 1.20, the last halfmile in 53.

A Good Gallop: Polydora was responsible for a pleasing effort over nine furlongs. She ran the first three in 37 4-5, first five in 1.2 3-5, mile in 1.43, and full journey in 1.56. Over Country: ' Joppa (A. Stove) jumped five of the steeplechase fences in good style. This was his first experience of the country, and he found no trouble with the big fences. Cerne Abbas showed further improvement. by sprinting half a mile home in 49 3-5. In all probability she will be nominated for the Wellington meeting. Riding on Saturday: Some riding engagements made for the Dunedin programme on Saturday include: —A. Parsons, Capital, Cape Gabo; A. Messervey, Royal Gallant, Dollar Bill; G. Humphries, Red Top; L. J. Ellis, Half Note, Jack Ahoy, Perpetuus; G. Ridgway, Pahu; M. Kirwan, Polydora, Polygraph; J. Dooley, Madam Pompadour; R. Beale, Fair Weather, Royal Limond, Lycidas; H. Turner, Wykemist, Free Air; J. Trotting meetings”to come. June 20, 23 or 24 —Auckland T.C. Bill B: Mr J. R. Brown’s. American colt Bill B has gone into F. C. Dunlevey’s stable at Addington. Bill B arrived in New Zealand in November last, and has since been attached to B. Jarden’s establishment at Wingatui. The colt is in excellent condition, and his career will be closely watched by the thousands of admirers of the colt’s sire, Single G, Imin 58|sec, the most famous pacer in the world.

Among the Pacers: Great Admiral, probably the best trotter in the Auckland province, is to race against the pacers on the first day of the Auckland fixture. He has only had one run in this division,, competing at the last Auckland Winter Meeting in the novice event. He struck interference in the first furlong on that occasion, and' lost a lot of ground, but for which lie would undoubtedly have taken a great deal of beating, as he finished like a train in third position. He has gone on satisfactorily of late, and the track would only have to be heavy for him to take a lot of beating in the Hobson Handicap next week.

Hoes Not Stay: Although she has yet to win a race, Worthy Princess has shown more speed than the average trotter, but a decided lack of stamina has found her wanting over the concluding stages of a fast-run mile and a-half. She gave two splendid displays at the Auckland February meeting, but when raced at Cambridge and Claudelands stopped badly over the last furlong after being one of the leaders into the straight on each occasion. Worthy Princess has suffered a good deal from leg troubles in the past, but her trainer, W. Hughes, appears to have succeeded in effecting a cure, and she is now going along soundly. Worthy Princess has been accepted for in the Winter Handicap at Epsom on Saturday, and is equal to effecting a surprise.
