A Svdney cablegram announced the death' of Colonel Percy Owen, who was the first director of works at Canberra.

Constable R- C. Drummond, who has been stationed at Kanieri for about 15 years, has received notice of his transfer to Oxford.

Mr H. MacCorkindale, Railway Works foreman, has received official notice of the cancellation of his transfer to Hillside.

Professor P. J. Noel Baker has been selected as Labour candidate for the Derby by-election (stated a London cablegram).

A London cablegram stated that Earl Stanhope, will succeed Hon. W. A. Ormsby-Gore (now Secretary for the Colonies) as First Commissioner of Works.

Mr F. Allan, Railways Guard, Lyttelton, arrived yesterday, on transfer to Greymouth. Mr P. Bloxam, Railways Guard, Dunedin, will arrive to-morrow, on transfer to Greymouth.

Passengers by yesterday’s express from Christchurch included Mr and Mrs W. E. Macken (from Whangarei), Mrs F. Johnston, Mrs E. Whiteman, Miss L. Jarvis, Rev. F. A. Parry, Messrs J. W. Walker, D. Tinnott, G. R. Hunter Junr., Sind W. J. Jeffries (Hokitika). ;

After having been’ for eighteen years Chairman of the Auckland Hospital Board, Mr. William Wallace was defeated for the position at the annual meeting of the Board yesterday. Rev. W. G. Wood was elected Chairman by six votes to five. Mr. Wood has been chairman of the Relief Committee of the Board. —Press Association.

Mrs Isabella Hucks, formerly proprietor of the Theatre Royal Cafe, died at Christchurch, yesterday. Mrs Hucks, who was in her 70th year, had a peaceful end after a severe illness. Born at Warrnambool, Victoria, where her parents had a booksellers’ business, Mrs Hucks came to Christchurch with her husband thirty-three years ago.

Mr M. W. I. Deavoll, at present Private Secretary 1 to the Minister of Education, has been appointed secretary to the Wellington Education' Board, in succession to Mr Hilton, who is retiring. Mr Deavoll has been in the Public Service for thirty years, and has served six successive Ministers of Education, as Private Secretary.—Press Assn.

The death occurred at Christchurch yesterday of Mr. John. Owen Jameson, aged 60 years. He was a member df the Stock Exchange for 25 years. Mr. Jameson dropped dead boarding a tram-car in Seaview Road, New Brighton yesterday afternoon. Last year he had a severe illness, from which he had not completely recovered. — Press Association.

The Governor-Designate of New South Wales, Admiral Sir Murray Anderson, contraetad a severe chill a few days before his arrival at Fremantle in the liner “Strathnaver,” which arrived there from London yesterday. He is seriously, but not dangerously, ill. He will require careful nursing. He was taken off the liner yesterday to the hospital. Lady Anderson and suite have also disembarked at Fremantle.

The death occurred at his residence at Reeftoh, early this morning, after t. an illness of about two months, of Mr. Isaac Patterson. Deceased was born at Reefton in 1879, and was educated at the Reefton District High School, and later at the Otago University, where he qualified for the legal profession. He was admitted as a solicitor in 1911. and as a barrister in 1917. He had carried on legal practice in Reefton since 1911, and was a member of the Council of the Westland District Law Society. He was prominent in local body activities in the Reeftort' district. Mr. Patterson is survived by his widow, two sons, and three daughters, all of Reef ton; also by seven brothers, including Mr. H. Patterson, Telegraph Supervisor at Greymouth The funeral will take place at 2 p.m. on Friday, ai Reef ton.
