TIMARU MAYORALTY
i -aMR. VINNELL’S INSTALLATION [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] TIMARU, June 15.
Mr. Percy Cornelius Vinnell was this evening, installed as Mayor of Tiniarn. Following the death of the late Mayor, Mr. T. W. Satterthwaite, the Town Clerk, as returning officer, called for nominations, two being received. Ono subsequently was withdrawn and doubt existed regarding the legal position, as the notice of withdrawal was not given seven clear days before the election. The returning officer consulted the Borough solicitors, and he later declared Mr. Vinnell elected as Mayor unopposed.
A special meeting of the Council was held to-night for the purpose of the investiture of the Mayor. Before signing the declaration, Mr. Vinnell stated that, as the result of an opinion expressed by the Borough solicitors, he proposed making the usual declaration. but he would ask the Council to obtain further legal advice. Should this not confirm with that given by the Borough solicitor, he would regard it his duty immediately to tender his resignation.
