The “Morning Post's” political correspondent says: British Government circles are surprised by an announcement made by the Prime Minister of South Africa, General Hertzog, that the Union oj South Africa would probably take over the administration of Swaziland in two years’ time, and that of Basoutoland and Bechuanaland soon after. it was emphatically pointed out that there was no warrant for any such assumption, as two principal conditions for a transfer are laid down in the South Africa Act, and these still remain to be fulfilled, namely: That a transfer can only occur with the consent of the native populations of these Protectorates, and the consent of Parliament. DERBY BY-ELECTION. LONDON, June 13. Mr. Leslie Thomas has declined an invitation from Derby to contest his father’s seat. ESSAY AWARDS. NEW YORK, June ?4. Two special prizes and seven honourable mentions welnt to Australia and New Zealand to-day, in the international competition of the New Historical Society, New York. The subject of the paper was “How can youth develop racial harmony?” Special prizes of fifty dollars each were awarded to Miss Mary Sullivan, Drummoyne.
