NOT DROWNED
BANKRUPT DIRECTOR'S RUSE. [by CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] SYDNEY, May 6. Hector George Thirkell, who was examined in bankruptcy here to-day, denied a suggestion that he had staged a drowning accident in New Zealand to enable him to escape from his wife. “Aly reason was to get out of New Zealand, and to make a fresh start,” he said. Thirkell arrived in Australia in 1933. His estate was sequestrated in March of last year, his liabilities being £5OOO. Questioned about the drowning incident in New Zealand, he said that h.e went for a swim at New Brighton, Christchurch. He left his old clothes on the beach. He came ashore at another spot, where he had secreted a new outfit. That night he left for Auckland and Sydney. Thirkell was reported as being drowned by the New Zealand Press, and subsequently leave' was sought in the Court to presume his death. This he managed to stop, through New Zealand friends.
He added that he did not attempt to conceal the fact that he was in Australia. His examination was adjourned.
