MOTORING SPEEDS
LOCAL BODIES’ PROTESTS. [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, May 7. Apprehension lest the Motor Regulations should be altered to allow heavy traffic vehicles to travel at greater maximum speeds than they are now allow’ed, was expressed at a conference on heavy traffic attended by representatives of local bodies. Points made by speakers were that greater speeds would cause a road to wear out more quickly, and ■would add considerably to the dangers of the travelling public. The conference passed the following resolution:—That, in the event of the Transport Department deciding to make changes in the direction of allowing increased speeds for heavy tiaffic, full opportunities should be given to the interested local bodies to make representations to the Department before decisions are made. The discussion arose out of mention of the Hon. R. Semple’s recent statement that the regulations might be revised to permit of greater speeds as the present regulations were framed only for vehicles with solid tyres. Some delegates suggested that the meeting should express its opinion abcut car speeds, suggesting that there was a legal limit, but as the conference was concerned only with heavy tiaffic vehicles, no resolution was passed.
