GREY WOMAN’S DEATH

ACCUSED COMMITTED. [per press association.] CHRISTCHURCH. May 6. Ruebena Shirley, married, 42 Alpha Road, was to-day committed to the next session of the Supreme Court at Christchurch for trial, by Mr. F. F. Reid, S.M., on a charge that on or about March 15, she used an instrument with intent to procure miscarriage on Catterina Maria Hill, or other means with like intent. She pleaded not guilty. Mrs. Hill died in the Christchurch Public Hospital on March 27, and an inquest was held in conjunction with the Lower Court proceedings. The inquest was then adjourned sine die. Bail was allowed in accused’s own recognisance of £5OO, and two sureties of £250 each, a condition being that she report to the police on alternative days. The next session of the Supreme Court at Christchurch opens on Tuesday. Throughout the afternoon, the evidence of system which Chief Detective Dunlop said earlier he proposed to call, was heard, under an order by the Magistrate prohibiting publication of the names of witnesses or their evidence. Eight witnesses were heard under this order, and at the conclusion Shirley pleaded not guilty and was committed for trial.
