REEFTON, March 14

The water-mains in Broadway have been fractured in several places by the road roller, in its action on the sides of the street, which have been receiving attention lately. Fire-plugs have suffered also, and County workmen have been compelled to work on the mains, at night, to repair the damage. Mr J. F. Downey, of the Mines Department, head office, Wellington, is visiting Reefton. While at work in the bush yesterday afternoon, Donald Black, married, of Black’s Point, struck himself on the foot with an axe, inflicting severe injuries. The blade penetrated the foot for almost its full length. The injured man was brought to Reefton, where Drs. Conlon and Wicken inserted fifteen stitches in the wound. , Mr. Black’s condition was to-day reported to be comfortable. The annual picnic of the Reefton branch of the Women’s Institute was held in dull but fine weather, and was well attended. Sports were held and competitions provided much amusement, particularly the blindfold feeding competition, which was won by Mesdames Lawry and Findlay. The following were the prize-winners: — Nail-driving: Mrs. Yellowlees 1, Mrs. Findlay 2. Stepping Competition: Mrs. Sharpe 1, Mrs Hampson 2. Egg and Spoon Race: Mrs. Sharpe 1, Mrs. Austin 2: Skipping: Mrs. Findlay 1, Mrs. Sharpe 2. Guessing competition: Mesdames Duff and Yellowlees 1, Mrs McElwee 2. ’ Blindfold Race: Ales-, dames Stevenson and Eklund I The Reefton Cricket Club were notified on Friday that a match against; the Kotuku Club is to be played for the Wingham Trophy at Kotuku, on the 22nd. Inst. This is a semi-final, and the winners will play off with Greymouth for the trophy. Mr Sumner, of the staff of the Reefton P. and T. Department, left for Wellington to-day, on transfer. He has been succeeded by Mr J. Richmond.
