Migration statistics disclose that Australia last year gained 1251 permanent residents, solely foreigners, chiefly Italians, Greeks and Americans. The arrivals of permanent migrants totalled 12,608. Departures numbered 11,357. GOVERNOR-GENERAL’S FLAG. SYDNEY, February 12. Mr. Lyons announced that henceforward the Governor General will use an official flag, approved by the late King in 1930 for use by the GovernorGeneral of a Dominion. The flag is the same as already used by India, South Africa and New Zealand. LIFE IMPRISONMENT. ADELAIDE, February 12. Arthur Nelson Durrant was sentenced to imprisonment for life with hard labour. Durrant had pleaded guilty to manslaughter, when charged with having murdered Joyce Forbes. Durrant, was found not guilty on the ground of insanity, when charged some weeks ago, with having’ murdered Hugh Forbes, the father of Joyce.
FARMERS’ TOUR. FREMANTLE, February 11. A party of twenty-six English farmers, representing the British National Union, who are en route for New Zealand are passengers by the Mooltan, which arrived to-day from London. They have been joined by nineteen farmers from South Africa. They will spend some time in Australia. Major-General F. Duncan is leader of the party. He said the " Union was a patriotic movement to forward the interests of the Empire and of primary producers, and they hoped to form branches in Australia.
