KIDNAPPERS
CAPTURED BY POLICE. LONDON, December 2. A message from Marseilles states that after four days, the police have arrested a woman, aged 68 years, and her son, aged 25, the kidnappers of the 18-months-old child of Dr. Malmjac, from whom they demanded £7OO as ransom. When the police were about to enter the kidnappers’ apartment, the son drew a revolver and threatened to kill the child unless they withdrew. The police shouted a promise that they would not arrest them if lie did not I fire. They then consulted headquarters. The police were reinforced, and ordered to make the arrest, whereupon they broke in a door, snatched the child, and overpowered the son. They arrested the pair, who admitted the crime. Protection from a crowd of 2,000 was necessary to prevent their being lynched. During the search, instructions how to fetid the child were broadcast, as well as a promise from the father to pay the ransom. The police believe the ransom was not wanted, the real objective of the kidnapping being to secure the child to represent the heir to an important estate.
