PARLIAMENT’S SESSION

GOVT. BUSINESS READY

SOUTH ISLAND REPRESENTAT’N

IPEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.]

WELLINGTON. August 13

Sir A. Ransom stated to-day that plans for the session opening on August 29 were well forward. There would be a number of bills with the object of amending the existing legislation. He did not anticipate that any difficulty would be experienced in securing their passage through the House.

In the event of the Address-in-Re-ply debate collapsing unexpectedly, the Government would be prepared to go right ahead with its legislative programme.

It is understood that the proposal to amend the electoral laws to provide for legislation in the voting system has received consideration from Cabinet, but any decision is being deferred till the return of Mr. Forbes and Mr. Coates.

Similarly the. question of the representation of the South Island in the House, has also been deferred, as the census will not be taken until next year. The coming election will probably be fought on the existing electoral boundaries, but it appears certain that after the completion of the census, and the meeting of the Boundaries Commission, the South Island will lose two seats in favour of the North. It is understood that the Government has considered this question, and there may be an amendment of the law to provide for a different system of readjustment. ELECTION CANDIDATES MR. HARGEST FOR AWARUA. INVERCARGILL, August 12. At a largely-attended meeting at Winton this afternoon, Mr. James Hargest, M.P., for Invercargill, was unanimously chosen as the official Nationalist candidate for Awarua at the general election. Mr. de la Perelle, in reply, said that some day he might have sufficient strength to re-enter politics..
