To-day’s Racing News

Galloping * MEETINGS TO COME. June 1, 3. —Otaki Maori. June 1,3, 4.—Dunedin. June 3,5, B.—Auckland. June. B.—Foxton. June 13, 15.- —Hawke’s Bay. z June 15. —South Canterbury.June 20, 22.—Napier Park. June 22. —Ashburton. June 29.— June 29.—Levin. RICCARTON NOTES. Engagements made by Riccarton horsemen at Wingatui to-morrow in- ' "elude:—A. E. Ellis, Coatette, Venite; L. J. Ellis, Nightform, Guarantee,. Amelita, Latitude, Land. Raid; A. Messervy. Sea Fox, Royal Gallant, Merry de Vai, Queen Dorothy, Quebec; G. Humphries, Vocal, Grey Boy; B. Brodie, Madam Pompadour; A. Russell, Grand Review, Fracas; A. C. Messervy, Knock Out; H. Turner, High Speed. Silver Sight has returned to active work following an easy time since the Easter meeting at Riccarton. It is proposed to give him a course of schooling shortly with a view to racing him as a hurdler during the winter. Battle Queen,'-ridden by R. Drinkwater, was jumped over the steeplechase schooling fences at Riccarton on Thursday, giving another encouraging display. W. McDonald has taken over a filly from Mr D. Spence, and will soon be putting her into serious work. She is a five-year-old by Shambles from ißilada, thus a sister to the recent West Coast winner Impossible. McDonald has given Grecian Prin.ce an easy time during the past week, but will have him back on the tracks again next week. DUNEDIN RACES. PROGRAMME FOR TO-MORROW. CHRISTCHURCH, May 31. The Winter Meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club will be commenced at Wingatui to-morrow. The track is, likely to be holding.. Speculation will be on the win and place system with indicators. The programme is as follows:— ,

Parasang '.. 9 9 Prince Tractor 9 0 A fair field of hacks will contest the Tahuna Steeplechase. Graball is likely to be reserved for the Otago Steeplechase. Snowy Dawn drew attention to her prospects by her good race at Washdyhe last Saturday. Red Lance is the form horse in southern circles, and Velvet and Prince Tractor have shown promisb. tn the absence of Graball, the favourites will probably be — RED LANCE, SNOWY DAWN, PRINCE TRACTOR.

12.8. TRIAL-HANDICAP, 7 furlongs.

The Trial Handicap, for three-year-olds and upwards that have never won a race, has drawn a mixed lot. There are, however, included some young horses that have shown encouraging form either in races or on the tracks, these including Mount Vai, Frenchie, McHeath, Coatette, Pompeii, Land Raid, and Rebel Lad. The best of these may be—•' , LAND RAID, FRENCHIE, MOUNT VAL. 12.46. BRIGHTON HANDICAP, 1 mile.

Vocal .. 71- vol. vrawiuiu < < The issue of the Brighton Handicap appears very open, and speculation is certain to be spread over the whole field. There is no outstanding candidate, but taking West Coast form as a guide, Latitude has to be seriously considered, while Red Dance has raced very consistently this year, his success at Riccarton at Easter over seven furlongs being especially attractive. Others in Poniard, Mayam, Milford and Quebec have all done well during the past month or so. The final summing up may be in favour of latitude, RED DANCE, ' QUEBEC.

Class is fairly strongly represenieu in those carded for the Provincial Handicap, and'there should be a close tussle over the final .stages. I* racas -will be having her first race since Easter, and provided the going is not too heavy, she will have to be regarded. Nightform will have the services of "a stronger rider than at Washdyke, and there will be a different tale to tell to-morrow. Venite is a doubtful proposition, and Toreador seems troubled by weight. Double Shot has a chance, while with the soft tiack that seems likely, Royal Gallant will be dangerous, and is capable of leading throughout. The favourite division may be confined to— NIGHTFORM, FRACAS, ROYAL GALLANT.

2.2. OTAGO STEEPLECHASE HANDICAP, about 2b miles. Umtalt .. 10 13 French Fleet 9 2 Graball - 010 Parasang ..9 0 Gold Knight 9 J Calharn .. 9 0 The numbers for the Otago Steeplechase have dwindled considerably, and the smallest field for some years will parade, and taking southern form as a guide, it is likely that favouritism may be confined to— UMTALI, GRABALL, FRENCH FLEET. 2.40. JUNE HURDLES HANDICAP, U

Lycidas ..103 Five horses only are due to go to, the post for the June Hurdles, a most disappointing response at this stage of tho winter programmes. Black Duke

cannot be considered to be. harshly treated, and he invariably races well at Wingatui. Those with prospects may be — BLACK DUKE, LYCIDAS, PALMARY. 3.18. WINTER HANDICAP, 7 furlongs.

Master Anomaly 8 0 Quite Soon 7 7 Some smart sprinters will be engaged in the Winter Handicap, and several are entitled to dispute the honour of favouritism. The best supported should* be — SEA FOX. ASSEMBLE, GREAT SHOT. > 3.56. ST. CLAIR HANDICAP, 7 furlongs.

A difficult problem awaits investors in the St. Clair Handicap, and again speculation will be widely distributed. Unseen, Arrowrose, Silk Arrow, Grand Review, Half Note, Gold. Fox, Amelita, Braw Lad, Merry del Vai and Mary Pratt have all shaped well of late, and the select of these will probably be— ' MERRY DEL VAL, ARROWROSE, SILK ARROWOTAKI FIELDS. PROSPECTS FOR TO-MORROW. The Otaki mid-winter meeting will open at Levin to-morrow, and conclude on Monday. Satisfactory fields have been secured, and prospects are bright for a successful meeting. The programme will open with the — TARARUA HACK HURDLES, U miles./ Esteem .. 1.1 2 Arctic Star 9 0 : Diamond .. 10 1 Minor .. 9 0 Air Laddie ;. 912 Affliction 9 0 Salt Spray 912 Count Willonyx 9 0 Esteem won with 10.9 at Woodville on Monday, narrowly beating Diamond, which is to .carry the same weight to-morrow. Even though Esteem had little to spare at Woodville, he has ’ the weight-carrying ability and the speed over the distance that should enable him to score again. Air Laddie tipped out at Woodville, but is usually a safe hurdler, and speedy. The three tbpweights appear to dominate the position in the order — ESTEEM, AIR LADDIE, DIAMOND.

Sporting Song 8 0 ■, , All off the same weight m the Kuku. Maiden Race, but few that have shown much promise should decide bettors to support— SPORTING SONG, ' POMPOSITY, EKATERE.

Acceptable is acknowledged as a sinart sprinter, staying on better this season than last. Debut is another that has shown marked ability over a short course, while Gold Mission, State Bank, and Happy. Hunting will find most support. The best may be ACCEPTABLE. HAPPY HUNTING. DEBUT.

Might has proved himself as a good handicap performer, and with 9.0 against this opposition, should be difficult to beat. Walton Park has failed since Easter, but at the weight must be given a chance. Of the others, Lady Ronald and Trishna read best. The order of favouritism may be — MIGHT, TRISHNA, WALTON PARK. 0TA I KI HACK HANDICAP, 1 mile and a distance.

Gay Boy .. 8 4 Transact .. 7 8 An even field has been collected here, with Kurapae, Tupurangi, Gay Bey, Hunting Bag, appealing best over the distance. Placed horses may be— TUPURANGI, KURAPAE, HUNTING BAG.

Croupier and Diatomous will add interest to this race. Croupier was a winner at Wairarapa Easter meeting, and Diatomous should be benefited with recent racing. Refresher, The Tiger, and Bodyline are possibilities, but the selection favours — CROUPIER, DIATOMOUS, THE TIGER. TE HORO HACK HANDICAP, 7 fur-

eluding fivent, the best prospects seem to bo held by— WHETUMA, ROYAL BANQUET, ETHIOP. ELLERSLIE SCRATCHINGS AUCKLAND, May 30. Ellerslie scratchings are: —For all engagements, Polly Douglas and Golden Wings, at 9 a.m.; for Greenlane Steeplechase, Irish Comet, at 9 a.m. RACING CONFERENCE REMITS. . A list of remits to come before the Naw Zealand Racing Conference on July 12. at Wellington, has been published. Included are several proposals that are certain to give rise to debate. , the most important being that sent in by tha Auckland Racing Club, urging that the Conference consider the question whether or not the licensing

of bookmakers, under conditions approved of by the Conference, should be permitted by law. This matter was considered by the Conference two years ago, but_.it was badly defeated. Should the Conference on this occasion agree to the remit, it does not mean that bookmakers will be licensed, as this has to be done by legislation. The executive committee of the Conference will move that there be an eight stone minimum during the period from June 1 to August 31. The Marton Jockey Club will sponsor a remit requesting the Conference to set up a committee to consider and report on a scheme to improve the riding of apprentices in New Zealand, and the Failding Jockey Club will seek to debar any club from giving free accommodation to and making contributions toward transport charges for horses attending its meetings. The proposal put forward at the last two Conferences by the Canterbury Jockey Club reducing the hack status from £250 and £SOO to £2OO and £4OO, will be taker up by the executive committee, ant- will no doubt be carried. - The Canterbury Club have a motion preventing any unnamed horses being accepted for in any race. The Tuapeka Club will seek again to have three trotting events on any day’s programme, and the use of blinkers is urged by the Wanganui Jockey Club.

EPSOM DERBY. RUGBY, May 30. Lord Derby’s horse, Bobsleigh, has been scratched from the Epsom Derby. Trotting MEETINGS TO COME. June I.—Waikato. June 1, 3. —Canterbury Park. June s.—For bury Park. June 8, Ashburton. June 22, 24 or 26.—Auckland. CANTERBURY PARK T.C. TO-MORROW’S MEETING. A commencement will be made tomorrow with the Canterbury. Trotting Club’s Winter Meeting, for which very good acceptances have been received. Given fine weather, the meeting should be one of the most successful held jn recent years. The day’s programme is as follows: —

Half the field in the Progressive Handicap will start off the limit and while therp is nothing outstanding in the number, Flotsam, Mataunga, and Silk Coat are all winners in more or less pretentious company. The best of the division may prove to be Mataunga. Sandy N was unsuccessful at the Hawera meeting and he is a much improved trotter while Kotinga is consistency itself and can be relied upon. Enigma was successful at the last Greymouth meeting and she is improving while the best of the remainder may be Real Boy. The finish should be fought out by-

Nobleman ways begin Quickly, and race should suit him. Aristotle ai Iraq represent a formidable pair, an? Sylvia Sydney has improved as a result of her North Island racing. The public may prefer—■ WISE GUV, IRAQ, SYLVIA SYDNEY. 12.40 p.m.: PAPARUA HANDICAP, 4.30 class, 2 miles. 10 Cloudy Range scr Trampfast (T) 1key Spec .. scr Avernutf •• 41 Craganour .. 1- Vesuvius . ■ - Master Roy .. 12 Wrecker •. -4 Raydus .. 12 k°ld Tinge .. 36 Taxpayer .. 12 Mountain BeU <2 Craganour and Taxpayer aie the early favourites for the Paparua Handicap, and the recent running of both geldings entitles them to the position. Cragano'ur won the King George Handicap“at Forbury Park with Taxpayer in second place, but the latter was unlucky to be beaten and showed his worth at Oamaru, when he beat a strong field in the President’s Handicap. Rey Spec is possibly a better horse than when he raced at Oamaru, and Master Roy, Vesuvius and Wrecker, especially the last-named, will go the full journey. Mountain Dell on 72 yards behind, is set the task Qf a champion and her connections can hardly be hopeful of her success. The public will select — TAXPAYER, CRAGANOUR, WRECKER, 1.25 p.m.: PIONEER HANDICAP, 2.52 class, 1J

Graham Direct 12 , The Southland mare Rocks Ahead, is a very brilliant pacer and with ordinary fuck in the running she will be handy all the journey. Her performance at Oamaru was outstanding. Graham Direct would only have to leave the mark smartly to make things interesting for all. for he is plainly-tho fastest three-year-old in the Dominion at present. Llewellyn’s Pride is overdue for a win and this race will possibly suit Nobleman belter than his earlier engagement. Wise Guy and Recess may be the best of the remainder, but the favourites should be ROCKS AHEAD, GRAHAM DIRECT, NOBLEMAN.

2.5 p.m.: ADVANCE HANDICAP, 2.45 class, li miles.

Wai' Buoy has forfeited 1 his engagement in the big two miles race for the Advance Handicap, for which he is likely to go out a warm favourite. He has already won 12 races in 13 starts, and there seems every prospect of him continuing his winning sequence. He is a racehorse of exceptional merit and is being handled with care. Tempest, the only horse to score a victory over War Buoy, is set to give away 24 yards. He looks the most likely to trouble the four-year-old, and Sunny ' Morn and Wild Guy may, prove the best of the remainder. The finish may be fought by— WAR BUOY, TEMPEST, WILD GUY. 2.45 p.m.: ELEVATION HANDICAP, (T.), 4.41 class, 2 miles. Belle Lorimer scr Gurner .. GO Fairyland .. set Garner .. 60 Standby .. 24 Great Way .. 60 Tevlot Downs 24 Sea Gift .. 72 Explosion .. 60 A small field in the Elevation Handicap should provide an exciting race. The back-marker Sea Gift, is set a big task and the winner may come from — TEVIOT DOWNS, EXPLOSION, STANDBY. I 3.25 p.m.: HAREWOOD HANDICAP, 3.28 class, 11 miles.

The field for the Harewood* Handicap includes young and improving pacers, and especial interest will centre in the form of Racketeer J whose performances of late have been below the average; Rocks Ahead and Chechaco, both bred in Southland have form to recommend, and if the former is reserved for this race, she should be the first choice. Gamble and Grace McElwyn are smart three-year-olds, and Graham Direct, on 12 yards, will be dangerous. In the absence of Rocks .Ahead, chief support may be accorded— GAMBLE, GRACE McELWYN, GRAHAM DIRECT. 4.5 p.m.: AU REVOIR HANDICAP, (saddle), 2.15 class, 1 mile. Aristotle is also useful with the weight up, and Accras, Margaret Bell, Jimmy de Oro, and Great Thought will all have friends. Popular fancies should be — IRAQ, JIMMY DE ORO, ARISTOTLE. WAIKATO MEETING PROSPECTS FOR TO-MORROW The second meeting of the Waikato Trotting Club will be held at Claudelands to-morrow. Fields are large, and recent form, suggests the following horses as likely to be prominent in engagements: — Novice Handicap: Kia Kah'a, Derby Fame, Bismuth. Newstead Handicap: Native Tree, Young Rodney. Tamahere Handicap: War Paint, Jackie Thorpe, Smooger. Ruakqra Handicap: Star Pronto, Lady Amanda, Tryment. Kaipari Handicap: Great Chum, Bonny Azure, Tinokaha. Te Kowhai Handicap: Kewpie’s Guy, Pegaway, Jackie Thorpe. Farewell Handicap: Red „ Hope, Transworthy, Rare Rey. The acceptances are as follow: —
