FLEET CAUSES A SCARE
THOUGHT GUNS EARTHQUAKE
MADRID, April 14
Panic-stricken inhabitants of Malaga, the Mediterranean resort on the Southern coast of Spain, rushed into the streets thinking that an earthquake had shaken the town when their walls began to shake and their window-panes were shattered, to the accompaniment of a dull rumbling sound, according to reports received here.
The local seismographic station was besieged by anxious inquirers when the “shocks” were repeated twice at intervals of three hours, but the station experts were nonplussed, since the seismograph had not recorded any earth movements. It was not until some hours afterwards that tho port authorities issued an explanation that the apparent earthquakes were repercussions of the heavy gun practice being carried out bv tlie Mediterranean Squadron of the British Fleet some distance from the coast.
