MR. MAUD CARTER

A SEX QUESTION. This is the slory of the strange ease of Mi-. Maud Carter, who was nev?r called "Mr.” in his life. Maud-Carter was the Barnsley omnibus conductress at the inquest into whose death recently it was revealed that ":-he” was a man. He had been missing for three weeks, then the body was found in the canal. Maud Carter was born at Pindor Oaks Street, Barnsley, forty-one years ago. Both father and mother thought the baby was a girl. As a little girl Maud Carter was brought up—and Maud is the name which he- has carried with him to the grave. At. school he was unusually good at. games, “games for a girl”—tomboy. So he grew up to be known as Miss Carter, and to work as an omnibus conductress for many years. Miss Carter was inspect res.; a few years ago at a time when th J company had inspectresses. He was competent and well liked. His hands were large for a woman, his physique unfeminine, his voice manly — but the people who knew him did not suspect anything. Miss Carter sometimes wore riding brc-c-cheu; and high-legged boots in v.int?r, but he was not the only conductress to do that, and he wore thin frocks in the summer. The revelations followed a postmortem examination.

Dr. If. W. Blackburn, the police surgeon, •'-aid it was medically reasonable in th ' circumstances that a mi take might have boon made regarding, the sex of the child by Carter’s parents when he was born.

But it. was not mentioned at the inquest that on the day of Carter’s disappearance he had received a letter requiring him to undergo a medical examination in connection with a claim for compensation.
