BOXING

TO-NIGHT'S TITLE BOUT Clarrie Raynor and Percy Hawes who meet at the Town Hall this evening, report themselves in great condition to battle for the featherweight title. Competition has made Raynor and Hawes very hitter ring enemies, and a vigorous 'fight is bound to result. It is some time since featherweights have been seen in action in a Greymouth ring and many patrons of the sport favour a bout between a pair of fast, clever hardhitting featherweights such as Hawes and Raynor. As amateurs, these boxers were keen rivals; since turning professional each has had a win at the other’s expense and now a deciding bout with the N.Z. featherweight title at stake must provide thrills. In their last bouts both Hawes and Raynor had victories, Hawes stopping Jarvis at New Plymouth and Raynor beating a lightweight, Mickey Holland at Blenheim. No doubt some disappointing bouts have been seen in Greymouth but to-night’s contest between a virile pair of young, eager fighters, spurred on by keen rivalry and the fact that the title is at stake.

Thc preliminaries should be an attraction. M. Scandrett the West Coast Rugby forward who showed promise two years ago is again competing and is matched with C. Marsh, a tough light-heavy who has won all his matches so far. W. Hawkins, who drew with A. Cox for the Coast welter title will meet G. McKane. Reefton. Hawkins is punching much harder now, and McKane will be in hard fighting condition. This is sure to be a fine contest. Unfortunately Hawke (Blenheim) who was to meet A. Cox, developed boils, and could not make the trip. However a wrestling bout has been arranged between H, Blanchfield and George Walker, middleweight champion of Wellington. Blanchfield will be conceding weight to his opponent, but a good grappler of his class is capable of looking after himself in any company. This should be an interesting bout.
