COAST FARMERS’ UNION

QUARTERLY CONFERENCE. The quarterly conference of the West Coast Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, was held this morning, Mr j. Mulcare presiding over an attendance of the following: Messrs J. J. McKay (Hari Hari), W. Fisher (Ngahere), F. Delaney (Inangahua), and D. Shannahan (Greymouth). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs H. G. Carter, A. Bradley, and J. Ryan.

On the motion of Messrs McKay and Fisher, it was decided to urge.the

Government to continue the Main South Road, beyond Weheka, and to ask the co-operation of the Automobile Association. The President moved that a remit be forwarded to the. Dominion Executive that a. voter be allowed to vote

for a, County riding contest at any polling booth in the County. He explained that for a Power Board or Hospital Board contest, a person could vote in any polling booth in the County, but in the case of a County riding contest, a person must vote in

the riding in which he has a vote. The difficulty was that there were many farmers, who had a vote in several ridings owing to the possession of property, and it was at present necessary for a farmer to visit the booths in each riding in which he had a vote, to exercise his franchise, or not exercise it at all. The result was there were some who did not exercise their full franchise, and this was not in the public interest. The idea was to enable a man to record all his votes at the one booth. The motion was seconded by Mr F. Delaney and carried.

It was resolved, on the motion of Messrs McKay and Shannahan, to urge the Dominion Executive to enquire into the interpretation of certain Dairy Factory regulations. A motion of condolence was passed with the relatives of the late Michael Ryan, of Rotomanu.

It was decided to urge the Government, through the Dominion Executive, and the Member for the District, to reinstate the No. 4A unemployment relief scheme.
